Your Itinerary

  • Fly to Reykjavík's Keflavik Airport, meet your tour manager and make the short transfer into the capital.

You'll have the rest of the day free. The fascinating city of Reykjavík, or Smoky Bay sits on a promontory jutting into the crystal clear waters of Faxaflói Bay, and is framed by majestic Mount Ejsa. The city’s brightly painted wooden buildings stand in sharp contrast to the stunning beauty of its setting, surrounded by water, distant ice and lava fields dotted with geysers and thermal springs.

With a host of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, Reykjavík justifies its claim to be among Europe’s hippest cities, despite its remote location. This evening, why not head to one of the many eateries in the compact city-centre, which range from the usual fast-food outlets to a host of restaurants serving traditional Icelandic and international cuisine? Seafood is hugely popular, and don’t miss the Icelandic lamb – said to be the best in the world. Wine is notoriously expensive, but beer is a refreshingly cheaper option, with several recently opened craft breweries adding local choice alongside the international brands.

  • This morning’s included guided tour will be the ideal way to get acquainted with Reykjavík and its surroundings. Among the highlights will be the extraordinary Pearl, a collection of disused water tanks now crowned with a glass dome and converted into a conference centre and meeting place. Take in the views of the city and the harbour beyond from its viewing platform.

You’ll also see the Presidential Residence, in its idyllic shore-side setting at Bessastaðir, and the brightly coloured fishing town of Hafnarfjord, as well as the Icelandic Houses of Parliament, the Lutheran Cathedral, the University Quarter and the towering Hallgrim’s Church, Iceland’s tallest – and most memorable – building.

This afternoon you'll have the chance to explore Reykjavík further under your own steam, although many will want to join our optional excursion to the world-renowned Blue Lagoon outdoor spa. No visit to Iceland is complete without a dip in these bubbling geothermal pools.

  • Today gives you the opportunity to experience "Iceland in a Nutshell", on our hugely popular Golden Circle tour. Join our tour manager for an unforgettable day that includes visits to extraordinary Þingvellir, a great lava arena deep in the Continental Rift valley where the world’s oldest national parliament (the Alþingi) was established in 930AD, and to Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest freshwater lake.

You’ll also see the active geothermal area site where the original Geysir is now all but extinct, but where its near neighbour, the Strokkur waterspout, erupts impressively every 10 minutes or so. Your fascinating tour will end with a visit to the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, perhaps Iceland’s most beautiful natural wonder.

This evening brings the highlight of your break – your included trip out of the city in search of a sighting of the Northern Lights. This truly awe-inspiring celestial wonder is caused by the interaction of solar particles with the polar atmosphere, and is a never-to-be-forgotten sight should you be lucky enough to see it. It's a fitting end to your final night in Iceland.

  • Transfer back to the airport to board your flight back to the UK at the end of a wonderful few days.

Further Information

  • The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately 45 minutes.

  • We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

  • Please note that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and therefore we cannot guarantee that you will be able to view them during your visit. The order of the itinerary may change in order to give you the best chance of experiencing them.

  • You will need a full 10-year British Passport (valid for a further 6 months on return to the UK) for this holiday. Children require their own passport. Holders of non-British Passports may need a visa. If you are in any doubt, please contact both the Iceland Embassy on 020 7259 3999 and the airline prior to departure, as information can change. We cannot except liability if you are refused entry because of invalid documents.

  • Visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice to find out the latest Foreign And Commonwealth Office travel advice for your holiday destination, as well as information about passports and visas.

  • If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

  • The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

  • Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

  • Rules may have changed since you last travelled to European Union countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. You do require government issued passport to travel.

Names - It is very important that all passenger names are exactly as per your passport although we do not require middle names.

Passport - Your passport must meet two requirements to travel to an EU country and to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It must be: Less than 10 years old on the day you return home (please check the "date of issue") and valid for at least 3 months after the day you return home (please check the "expiry date").

Visa - You do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS) - Commencing in late 2023 or 2024, all citizens of the United Kingdom will require a ETIAS electronic form completed prior to their arrival into the EU and Schengen member countries. The cost for this travel authorisation will be €7.00 per person with exceptions for under 18’s and over 70’s. The latest information and further details can be found at www.etias.com.
