The national capital, Canberra, may lie a little way inland, but otherwise Australia is a nation of ports. Starting in the north, Darwin, Australia’s northernmost city is a classic frontier town that acts as gateway to Kakadu National Park, with its swamps, mangroves, resident salt-water crocodiles and ancient aboriginal art. Clockwise and west, you'll find bustling Cairns, and eventually laid-back Brisbane where the legendary surfing paradise of the Gold Coast begins. Melbourne, Australia’s beautiful second city, is a cultural hotspot and foodie paradise, while Adelaide's leafy streets bask in a Mediterranean climate on the edge of the Barossa Valley - home to some of Australia’s finest wineries.
