Inside our itineraries – Catching up about Carcassonne with Ellen
Our Head of E-Commerce, Ellen, recently visited Carcassonne, Avignon and Provence – here's what she discovered about rural France.
When you think about fairytale landscapes, few places in the world compare to Europe’s medieval hotspots. Among them, France’s magnificent UNESCO-listed sites, from enchanting Mont St. Michel to elegant Provence, sit at the very top of the list. Ask anyone who’s explored this delightful part of the world, though, and they’ll tell you that there’s much more than just castles to enjoy in France.
Our team love the rambling vistas and romance of our continental neighbours, and we recently caught up with our Head of E-Commerce, Ellen, on her very own wish-list trip to Carcassonne and the south of France. Talking about her personal highlights, first impressions, and top tips for making the most of each day, here’s what Ellen made of the trip.

How did this trip change the way you see the destination?
Most of the time I've spent in France has been in Paris, so it was nice to see a more relaxed French lifestyle. Aside from that, it was as I expected – very beautiful scenery.
Was there an unexpected experience that turned out to be a highlight of the trip?
The optional excursion to Narbonne turned out to be my favourite day. The little land train at Collioure was great fun for a tenner, too, and truly unexpected!

Who do you think would absolutely love this destination, and why?
I think it’s a region that should appeal to all ages, although perhaps the itinerary is best suited to those over 60 in some places.
Did any of the hotels or experiences stand out?
The Mercure Hotel was great! Also, our tour manager was what stood out on the trip – she was fabulous.
What local dishes or culinary moments wowed you the most?
The duck! I found this restaurant called Comte Roger, and the food was absolutely sublime. There were also a couple of places with gluten-free crepes, which was perfect for me.

What cultural traditions or local encounters added something special to your journey?
I think it’s the small touches from local people that made the biggest difference. All the staff at the hotel were so welcoming, and people in the city couldn’t be warmer.
What new insights or practical tips would you share to help others plan the perfect trip here?
Explore the main town using one of the walking trails recommended by the tourism office. September to October is also a lovely time to go.
If you could sum up the feeling of this place in one word, what would it be?
Timeless!
Would you go back, and if so, what would you do next time?
I would like to return and spend more time exploring the wider area, especially the vineyards.
