Mostar Old Town, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mostar old town, Bosnia and Herzegovina

A nation shaped by conquests, alliances, and a conflux of European influences, Bosnia and Herzegovina is perhaps the most varied of all the Balkan nations. Known for its Ottoman architecture, distinctive customs, and vast medieval bastions, this enchanting destination is delightfully compact and makes for a convenient and comfortable setting for a touring holiday.

Of its many highlights, the best-known is Mostar, and its remarkable arched bridge, Stari Most, is particularly impressive. Standing 24 metres above the River Neretva at its highest point, this historic crossing was originally a feature of the city’s Ottoman rule, but it’s been repaired and rebuilt in the same style numerous times across the centuries. Also of note in Mostar are the colourful traditional bazaars, which sell everything from street foods and spices to handcrafted carpets and textile goods.

Another significant part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural makeup is its varied religious heritage, and some of the most interesting sites in this regard can be found further south. Medjugorje, one of the Balkans’ most popular pilgrimage spots, and its folkloric Hill of Apparitions, where six visionaries were said to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary. Further east, the secluded town of Blagaj, nestled on the banks of the River Buna, is home to Blagaj Tekke, an extraordinary Dervish monastery, which showcases the Islamic traditions that still thrive in the country.
