Church of St. John at Kaneo, Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Occupying a position at the heart of the Balkans, North Macedonia is a nation of exquisite natural beauty, renowned pilgrimage routes, and distinctive local culture. Of its many highlights, perhaps the best-known is the extraordinary Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, which it shares with neighbouring Albania. Ringed by mountains and charming lakeside villages, this striking wonder has no shortage of marvellous sights to soak up as you explore.

On the banks of the lake lies picturesque Ohrid, another of North Macedonia’s must-see spectacles, and the cobbled old town promises the perfect setting for slower-paced exploration. The town is sometimes better known by its nickname, the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkans’, having earned it thanks to a rich collection of ancient Byzantine monasteries and churches. In addition to the religious landmarks, Ohrid is a key point on both the Cyril and Methodius route and the ancient Via Egnatia, and its Roman past reflected by its wide range of hill forts and villas.

The most impressive place of worship is the Church of Hagia Sophia, with its well-preserved frescoes and magnificent vaulted ceilings. For a more history-oriented day’s exploration, be sure to enter Samoil’s Fortress, a 10th-century bastion featuring panoramic views of the lake from the ramparts.

In the Plaošnik Archaeological Park, you can take a fascinating step back into the past with a stop at St. Clement’s Church, one of Europe’s oldest universities. Also of interest here is the clifftop Church of St. John at Kaneo, looking out over the lake, and the Monastery of St. Naum.
