Bookended by the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic Sea, Finland offers some of Europe’s warmest welcomes despite being one of the coldest and most northerly on the continent. In fact, it has been officially recognised as the happiest place in the world for nine consecutive years, and with such a wide variety of natural and man-made wonders, it’s not hard to see why.
Take Helsinki, for instance, the nation’s cosmopolitan capital, which sits a short way across the sea from the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Past the city’s Esplanade Park is the Kruununhaka district, and it’s here that visitors can discover the Presidential Palace amongst several other Neoclassical landmarks.
Further east, the charming Katajanokka neighbourhood, separated from the mainland by a canal, boasts some of Finland’s finest Art Nouveau landmarks and a number of exquisite harbour villages. Also of note here is the imposing Uspenski Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in Western Europe.
Other highlights of Helsinki include tributes to Finland’s cultural heritage, including the Sibelius Monument, built in honour of the acclaimed Finnish composer of the same name, and the Swedish Theatre. The Temppeliaukio Church is another must-see spot and is among the city’s most unique sights as its dome rises out of solid rock. If relaxation is front of mind, there’s no shortage of options for self-care. Famous for its thermal spa culture, the city is home to spas and saunas, and visitors can indulge at leisure.
