Known for its rich contrasts, Singapore features a memorable variety of colonial-era monuments, innovative modern skyscrapers, and a whole host of world-class food markets that illustrate its colourful history. Having been part of Malaysia before becoming an independent city-state in 1965, Singapore has since grown into a hub of innovation with a truly unique local culture. With Peranakan, Malay and international communities standing side-by-side, it’s a patchwork of cultural influences and is just as rewarding to explore on foot as it is from its many rooftop viewpoints.

The Civic District, which was once the heart of colonial rule in Southeast Asia, is home to the Victoria Concert Hall, the National Gallery of Singapore and Parliament House, best admired from nearby Esplanade Park. Nearby, Merlion Park is home to the city's best-known statue, a half-lion, half-fish ‘merlion’ that has come to symbolise Singapore itself. Elsewhere, Little India's shopfronts and spice stalls promise a feast for the senses while Chinatown's narrow alleyways and traditional tea houses are some of the best spots to explore on foot.

From the Marina Bay Sands Skydeck, which numbers amongst Singapore’s most famous landmarks, you can enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding skyline. Spanning a 101-hectare section of coastal land, the Gardens by the Bay below is another wish-list highlight and is home to more than 1.5 million plants. One of the most striking sights here is the Supertree Grove, a series of artificial trees and vertical gardens that have helped earn Singapore its reputation as 'the Garden City'. Visitors can also take in the Gardens’ Cloud Forest, built around a 35-metre indoor mountain, and the Flower Dome, home to plant species from five continents.

For a different side of the city, the Joo Chiat district's 1920s shophouses offer insight into Peranakan heritage, the culture of Singapore's early Chinese and Malay settlers. A short distance offshore, Sentosa Island, known locally as the 'State of Fun', is home to family attractions including the Singapore Oceanarium and the Fort Siloso Skywalk, as well as a cable car link to Mount Faber. Singapore features as part of the Malaysia, Singapore & Desaru Beach Escape – Premier Collection tour, linking Malaysia's major cities to a final beach escape on the South China Sea.
