Day One

Fly to Basel, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to your hotel. Depending on your flight time you may then like to venture into this prosperous, cultured city and perhaps explore its wonderful Christmas markets, situated on cafe-lined Barfusserplatz, and historic Munsterplatz, in the shadow of the magnificent cathedral.

Day Two

Today you'll cross into Germany and discover the scenic countryside of the Black Forest. Follow the tiny waterways of the bachle (miniature canals that once supplied the city's water) along the cobbled streets of Freiberg, see the city's historic squares and great sandstone cathedral, and perhaps enjoy lunch in a cheerful weinstube (tavern). You'll also visit Triberg, a traditional centre of wood carving and cuckoo-clock making.

Day Three

Rest and relax in Basel, today. Pay another visit to the Christmas markets, wander the cloisters of the cathedral or climb to its terrace, which offers stupendous views across the Rhine to the Black Forest beyond.

Alternatively, join our optional excursion to Strasbourg. Here 'Europe's oldest Christmas market' is held in the shadow of the city's magnificent cathedral. Browse the stalls, or head into the Petite France quarter to explore its ancient canals, covered bridges, cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings.

Day Four

Bid farewell to Basel and return to the airport to board your flight back to the UK.

Hotel Basilisk ★★★

Conveniently located in a quiet area to the north-east of the city centre, the Basilisk is close to the bank of the Rhine and a 10-minute stroll of the city's major attractions.

We found the the holiday very good, the only surprise was the city tax we had to pay the hotel on the last day. Basel is very expensive so did not have much money left. We did not enjoy Strasbourg so much as everywhere was extremely crowded.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the Basel Christmas markets, together with the included trip to Triberg and Freiberg. The optional trip to Strasbourg was extremely good and we enjoyed getting to the Christmas markets on the island in the city.
