Your Itinerary

Day One: Fly to Denver

Fly to Denver, gateway to the Rockies and the vast Great Plains of the American West. Meet your tour manager and journey north into Wyoming, to overnight in frontier-town state capital Cheyenne.

Day Two: Journey into South Dakota

Journey on, taking in historic Fort Laramie, a landmark outpost on the Oregon Trail. Then head into South Dakota, where the Black Hills, rising from the Plains and immortalised in song, formed the background to one of North America’s most famous gold rushes. Spend the first of two nights in quintessentially western Rapid City.

Day Three: Included visit to Mount Rushmore

Head into the hills to see two of America’s most iconic and astonishing monuments. Firstly Mount Rushmore, with its four giant presidential faces carved into the cliff, followed by the Crazy Horse Memorial, the towering tribute to the Sioux leader that is perhaps the world’s most ambitious ‘work in progress’. Journey back this afternoon to Rapid City, through beautiful Custer State Park.

Day Four: Included visit to Deadwood

Discover Deadwood, ‘wildest of the wild west towns’, stomping ground – and burial place – of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok, before travelling on through the High Plains to stay in classic western town Sheridan, close to the Bighorn Mountains.

Day Five: Included visit to the Little Bighorn Battlefield

Visit the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of Custer’s famous Last Stand against Crazy Horse and his warriors in 1876, then head on to Buffalo Bill’s hometown. Cody, Wyoming is where the wooden boardwalks and swing doors of the saloons are authentic recreations of the colourful past.

Day Six: Included visit to Yellowstone National Park

See mother nature in all her glory as you journey into majestic Yellowstone National Park, with its rugged beauty, its lakes and canyons and its bubbling cauldrons. Take in the Yellowstone River, which roars through a 24-milelong gap in an ancient plateau, and visit the park headquarters at Mammoth Hot Springs, before overnighting in West Yellowstone.

Day Seven: Journey through the Grand Teton National Park

Journey south through Yellowstone, hopefully witnessing an eruption of the famous Old Faithful geyser. Then journey through the equally breath-taking Grand Teton National Park, its jagged peaks rising abruptly from the valley floor, and head to Jackson, in its forested setting, for a two-night stay.

Day Eight: Rest and relax

Rest, relax and take in the surroundings of quintessential western town Jackson, with its boardwalks, shops and stores.

Day Nine: Journey into Utah to Salt Lake City

Continue south into Utah to Salt Lake City, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, and hometown of the Mormon Church, whose multi-spired Temple and adjacent Tabernacle lies at its heart. Stay overnight in this friendly, easy-going place.

Day 10: Journey through Utah to Bryce Canyon

Drive further south across stunning Utah, passing from desert scrubland into wooded hills to Bryce Canyon, where millions of years of erosion by ice and water have left hundreds of towering red, yellow and orange pinnacles pointing skywards. Spend two nights in these spectacular surroundings.

Day 11: Included visit to Zion National Park

A fascinating day begins in other worldly Bryce, before the afternoon is spent in beautiful Zion National Park, where the forests and plunging waterfalls are a lush contrast to Bryce.

Day 12: Journey past Lake Powell to Monunment Valley

Head through yet more spectacular scenery, via the shores of Lake Powell, to Monument Valley, where the towering red sandstone mesas rising from the desert floor are amongst the most iconic of all American images. Stay overnight in nearby Kayenta.

Day 13: Included tour of Monument Valley

Take in the beauty of Monument Valley as you enjoy a tour into the park to get up close to its sandstone masterpieces and learn about the lives of the Navajo people. Later, head west into Arizona, to the edge of the abyss that is the Grand Canyon, perhaps nature’s most startling wonder.

Day 14: Optional helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon

This morning, perhaps take an optional helicopter flight over the canyon, before re-boarding the coach for the last cross-country journey, to glittering Las Vegas, for a final two-night stay.

Day 15: Optional night-time helicopter flight over the Las Vegas strip

A last day in Las Vegas brings the chance of rest and relaxation at the hotel, or perhaps a stroll along the famous strip to take in the jaw-dropping hotels. This evening, as a fitting finale to your stay, take to the skies on the optional night-time helicopter flight over the strip.

Day 16: Overnight flight back to the UK

After the opportunity for some last-minute shopping, transfer to the airport for your overnight return flight.

Day 17: Arrive in the UK

Arrive home, at the end of a truly spectacular, unforgettable western adventure.

The Wonders of the US National Parks Touring Hotels

Further Information

Passports and visas

When travelling to the USA, British citizens require passports with an integrated chip (shown on the front by a small rectangular symbol beneath the word PASSPORT), valid beyond the return date from the USA. Visas are not normally required for entry, but visitors must apply for an ESTA online with US Immigration at least 72 hours before departure at www.cbp.gov/esta . The current charge is $14 for British Citizens. British subjects and anyone who has a criminal record or has ever been arrested should consult the US Embassy as a visa may be required. Note too that if you have visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011, or have dual nationality with any of these countries, you do require a US visa and cannot travel on the Visa Waiver Program.

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately 2 hours.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted on any coach forming part of your holiday; regular stops will be made though for your comfort en route. The majority of hotels in North America are non-smoking throughout including in all bedrooms. In general smoking outside is acceptable, but do look out for signs prohibiting this close to public entrances or bus stops.

Tipping

Gratuities are a way of life in North America, and it is generally accepted that they form part of a person's earnings. The customary gratuity for a coach driver or Tour Manager is about $5 per person per day. It is normal to tip 15-20 per cent of the bill for a taxi or in a restaurant, and to leave a dollar or so per drink in a bar.

On your flight

All outbound flights depart and arrive on the same day. All return flights leave in the evening and land in the UK the next day. On-board meals will usually include lunch and a snack on outward flights, and dinner and breakfast on flight home. Soft drinks are complimentary, but some airlines will charge for alcoholic drinks.

Casino age restrictions

Local laws stipulate that that there must be at least one person aged 21 or over occupying each room booked. Casino floors cannot be entered by under 21s unless they are accompanied by an adult aged over 21.

Luggage allowance

You are permitted to take one suitcase per person on the aircraft, which should not exceed 23kg.

Helicopter flights

Sightseeing flights by helicopter are weight controlled and balanced. Please contact us if you wish to book a helicopter flight and your bodyweight exceeds 250lb. (In such cases, a seat may have to be left empty, and some companies may charge a premium.)

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

Hotel rooms

Standard hotel rooms in North America will contain one or two double- or queen-sized beds, and it is not possible to add extra beds to the room. Parties consisting of more than two travellers, but who have only booked one room, will be expected to make use of the two beds provided. If this is a concern, you may wish to consider booking more than one room for your group.
