Wish-list experiences can be found all over the world, from watching the sun set over the African Savannah to embracing Brazil’s samba rhythms in Rio or cruising above Australia’s world-famous Great Barrier Reef. You don’t need to travel across the continents, though, for some of the best, and there are plenty to choose from on your doorstep. Whether you can’t get enough of the culture, enjoy setting off down the path less travelled, or feel more at home bathing on Mediterranean beaches, your next wish-list adventure is only a stone’s throw away.

Which destinations are best for you?

While Europe is home to spectacular sights, some spots stand out. From the dramatic Norwegian fjords to the beautiful Douro Valley, we’ve rounded up the top European travel destinations. Our team has been thinking about their favourite destinations across the continent, and they’ve come up with a list of 10 places which are perfect for a 2026 getaway.

For culture buffs

Florence, Italy

Home to some of the world’s most sought-after destinations, Italy is a household name when it comes to cultural holidays and city breaks, and topping the list of its must-see centres is Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. A treasure trove of architecture, museums, and world-famous landmarks, Florence deserves a spot in all aspiring holidaymakers’ travel plans.

Of the city’s popular sights, the world-renowned Uffizi Galleries are perhaps the most memorable, with their vast collection of Renaissance masterpieces. The red-tiled Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is another iconic piece of the Florentine skyline and is simply a must-visit for any Tuscan itinerary.

Our recommended tour – Portofino, Florence & Tuscany

Andalucía, Spain

Though we may be cheating by picking an entire region, a holiday in Andalucía will have you spoilt for choice, given the abundance of historic cities waiting to be explored. Encompassing Spain’s southern corners, Andalucía promises a diverse range of Moorish landmarks and a rich cultural heritage.

From flamenco dancing in Seville to the birthplace of tapas in Cadiz, there are plenty of centres on the Costa del Sol that deserve to feature in your 2026 travel plans. Our personal favourite, though, has to be Moorish Granada with its iconic Alhambra and stellar Moorish architecture.

Our recommended tour – The Majestic Cities of Andalucía

For history lovers

Athens, Greece

Athens, often referred to as the birthplace of democracy, is an ever-popular option for European travel. With timeless wonders and bustling modern attractions, the Greek capital promises rewarding exploration at every turn, all against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea.

A particular favourite of ours, away from the city’s busier spots, is the Koukaki neighbourhood, which sits only a short walk from the ancient Acropolis and the bustling Plaka district. Here, locals enjoy life at a slower pace with leafy streets, traditional tavernas, and charming independent shops.

Our recommended tour – Ancient Greece Uncovered

Tallinn, Estonia

Trading the Aegean Sea for Northern Europe, the capitals of the Baltic states offer a diverse mix of historic old towns, rugged woodland scenery, and unspoilt coastline. Of these, Tallinn stands out thanks to its medieval landmarks and Hanseatic old town.

For the best views of the city, venture to the top of Toompea Hill or wander its exquisite old town for an immersive taste of local life. Pair your trip with nearby Riga and Vilnius for a broader introduction to the region.

Our recommended tour – Baltic Capitals – Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius

For nature tourists

Sognefjord, Norway

When it comes to natural beauty, our next pick always ranks highly. Nestled on Norway’s West Coast is Sognefjord, the country’s longest and deepest fjord. A journey along this magnificent waterway promises breath-taking vistas and charming alpine towns abound.

For the perfect introduction to the local area, start in colourful Bergen, the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’, and take plenty of time to soak up the scenery. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the spell-binding Northern Lights!

Our recommended tour – Beautiful Fjords of Western Norway

The Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

With alpine scenery still front of mind, Montenegro is perhaps a surprising choice to rival Norway’s magnificent fjords, but trust us – it’s well worth considering for a European getaway with a difference.

Despite being often overshadowed by neighbouring Croatia, Montenegro is every bit as impressive, with its mountain landscapes, Adriatic views and welcoming inland towns. Our undeniable highlight, though, is the Bay of Kotor, the largest ‘fjord’ in Southern Europe. This hidden gem, home to winding inlets and medieval villages, boasts a warmer climate than the northern fjords and is backed by truly spectacular alpine vistas.

Our recommended tour – Dubrovnik, Montenegro & the Dalmatian Coast

For rail travel

The Douro Valley, Portugal

A dream destination for foodies across the world, the Douro Valley provides some of Portugal’s best local produce with golden fields and rolling vineyards dotting the neighbouring countryside. For a leisurely glimpse of the region’s undulating vineyards and the rich farmland that has made it such a popular choice for wine-lovers and casual visitors alike, slow your exploration down on board the valley’s vintage steam trains.

After an easy-going exploration of the Douro’s charming wine-making towns, there are few spots better-suited to crowning your trip than the region’s largest city, Porto. Comprising bustling markets, colourful public squares and a lively atmosphere, it makes for an excellent endpoint to any Portuguese getaway.

Our recommended tour – Little Trains of the Douro

The French Pyrenees, France

Though perhaps lesser-appreciated compared to other holiday hotspots in Spain and France, the glorious Pyrenees will have you spoilt for choice of heritage railways to enjoy. While each route boasts its own distinctive character and impressive highlights, le Petit Train Jaune (Little Yellow Train) stands out as the region’s best.

Taking in UNESCO-listed Villefranche-de-Conflent and the lofty heights of Bolquere-Eynea ahead of a final stop amongst the citadels of Mont Louis, a ride aboard the Little Yellow Train has no shortage of scenic highlights to feast your eyes on. Better yet, you’ll be perfectly placed to hop aboard one of the region’s other heritage lines, from the Red Train to Nuria’s spectacular rack railway.

Our recommended tour – Little Trains of the Pyrenees

For ‘set-jetting’

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Though it’s hardly a new trend, ‘set jetting’ seems set to remain one of the most popular forms of travel in 2026, so if films are more your thing, picking a spot from the silver screen might be the perfect choice for you. With that in mind, no list of Europe’s most recognisable filming locations would be complete without Croatia and medieval Dubrovnik, the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’.

Having lent its cobbled alleys to the city of King’s Landing in HBO’s wildly popular series, Game of Thrones, this magnificent medieval town is an ideal choice for fans of the show. Climb the imposing city walls for panoramic views over the fairy-tale streets below, step into the streets of King’s Landing on the Stradun (main street) or enjoy a sightseeing tour of its most historic landmarks.

Our recommended tour – Delights of Croatia – Exclusively Solo

Lake Como, Italy

In terms of unspoilt beauty, few spots in Europe compare to idyllic Lake Como in Northern Italy. Comprising charming lakeside towns, sparkling waters, and looming alpine scenery, this Northern Italian outpost has captured the imaginations of countless travellers for centuries. Despite its idyllic vistas, though, natural beauty isn’t Lake Como’s only claim to fame.

Having been used as the backdrop for several modern Hollywood hits, including Star Wars’ turn-of-the-century prequel trilogy and the 2006 Bond film, Casino Royale. More recently, the nearby Villa Balbiano featured in the semi-biographical crime drama, House of Gucci, making it the perfect choice for a ‘set-jetting’ break closer to home.

Our recommended tour – Lake Como, St. Moritz & the Bernina Express
