Sail into the romantic heart of Germany
Sail through the impressive Main-Danube canal on this scenic cruise from Frankfurt. Discover Bavaria's rich history as we make calls in a string of medieval cities, including UNESCO-listed Bamberg, historic Nuremberg and beautifully restored Wurzburg, situated at the start of Germany's picturesque 'Romantic Road', and completing the memorable voyage in Austria's Italianate gem Passau.
Make your own way to Frankfurt and join Olympia in time for dinner and a leisurely evening on board.
After a lazy cruise downriver this morning, Olympia arrives in medieval Wertheim, renowned for its half-timbered houses, pretty twisting streets and a majestic castle. See the historic sights on our included walking tour, and learn about the town's history of glass-blowing as you pay a visit to local craftsmen.
Olympia reaches Wurzburg this morning, a beautiful UNESCO-listed city surrounded by fields of vineyards. Try the local wines at one of many wine bars in the centre, and spend some time exploring the charismatic streets of its Altstadt (old town). Our optional guided tour will introduce you to the magnificent Residenz and its impressive gardens: the centrepiece of this charming city. Re-board Olympia this afternoon as she continues her journey upriver.
We'll spend the morning cruising towards enchanting, UNESCO-listed Bamberg, whose beautiful medieval streets and buildings, which you'll have time to explore during the afternoon, have retained their original beauty. Join our optional walking tour with a local expert guide through the streets of the Altstadt, before re-joining Olympia as she journeys into the Main-Danube Canal this evening.
Continuing her passage along the canal, Olympia reaches Nuremberg this morning. The medieval streets of this alluring city are bursting with character, its rebuilt timber houses and historic architecture each preserving its original charm. Join our optional walking tour to see the city's highlights, including the imposing fortress, the Rathaus (parliament building) and the spires of the Sebalduskirche.
Today, we journey into the Danube, passing soaring, densely forested cliffs. Marvel at 'Mad' King Ludwig's impressive Befreiungshalle - a spherical monument that towers above Kelheim - and choose to disembark to explore Weltenburg Monastery, set on the riverside in a tranquil position beneath the forested slopes. Olympia then continues upriver to Regensburg this afternoon, where an included walking tour brings to life the city's medieval heart.
This morning Olympia reaches Passau, completing the final leg of our Bavarian journey. Located atop a narrow peninsula that juts into the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, this attractive city has a long trading history. Our optional guided tour introduces you to the city, with a visit to the elaborate St Stephen's Cathedral, where you'll enjoy a recital played on Europe's largest organ. You're free during the afternoon to continue exploring, before a final dinner on board marks the conclusion of the journey.
This morning, disembark Olympia and make your own way home.
