See some of Hungary's greatest delights on this holiday that blends vibrant cities with dazzling scenery. Begin with a three-night stay in romantic Budapest, set on the banks of the mighty Danube, then travel along the shimmering shores of Lake Balaton to call at a string of pretty towns and spend two nights in its blissful surroundings.
Budapest Holiday Itinerary
Fly to Budapest, meet your Tour Manager and transfer by coach into the heart of the city and your hotel. Spend the rest of the day settling in to your surroundings or, depending on your arrival time, head into the capital to explore - our Tour Manager will be happy to help with suggestions.
Day One: Fly to Budapest
See the magnificent sights of Budapest on this morning's included tour. Divided by the great Danube, this beautiful city of two halves comprises elegant Buda on the western bank of the river and vibrant Pest on the east. See the former Royal Palace, the spectacular Parliament buildings and the buzzing metropolis of Pest's Belvaros, or old town. We'll then head out of the city to the beautiful Danube Bend, where the Baroque town of Szentendre occupies a stunning riverside setting.
Day Two: Discover Budapest on an included tour
Upon returning to Budapest during the afternoon, you're free to spend the rest of the day at leisure, perhaps joining our optional excursion this evening to see a colourful folklore show.
Today is kept free for you to enjoy the delights of Budapest. Perhaps visit vast St Stephen's Cathedral, the ornate Opera House, the fascinating Museum of Fine Arts or marbled Heroes Square. An optional excursion offers the opportunity to visit the Szechenyi Thermal Baths, one of Europe's largest spas, set within the tranquil surroundings of leafy City Park.
Day Three: Enjoy the chance to visit the Szechenyi Thermal Baths
Today we leave the city behind and travel towards the glistening shores of Lake Balaton. Known to Hungarians as "Balcsi", the lake is Europe's largest body of fresh water and is popular for bathing thanks to its warm waters and exceptionally shallow depth. Our first stop of the day is at the famous porcelain factory at Herend, where you'll enjoy a mini-factory tour. We'll then continue to ancient Veszprem, home to a beautiful old town in which great St Michael's Cathedral punctuates the skyline.
Day Four: Travel to Lake Balaton and call in Herend and Veszprem
Arriving on Balaton's exquisite shores, a last visit is made to the wooded nature reserve of the Tihany peninsular, Hungary's first national park. After enjoying the views we'll continue to Balatonfured for a two-night stay.
Explore the magnificent lake on today's included tour, calling first at Balatonudvari, where the heart-shaped tombstones in the local cemetery are an arresting sight, before heading on to the town of Keszthely. After a chance to explore and to see vast Festetics Palace, we'll complete our day with a visit to Badacsony, sitting immersed in vineyards beneath the striking volcanic rock pile after which it is named. Enjoy lunch (payable locally) and a wine tasting in the bustling town before returning to the hotel for a relaxing final evening.
Day Five: Explore Lake Balaton on an included tour
Bid farewell to idyllic Balaton and the hotel, and transfer back to Budapest Airport for the return flight, at the end of a marvellous few days.
Day Six: Fly back to the UK
