Pristine, captivating Northern Norway
Journey 200 miles above the Arctic Circle to compact, colourful Tromsø. Crowned by its towering cathedral, and home to welcoming bars and restaurants that warm the winter days, Tromsø is both a vibrant city and an ideal base from which to explore the vast, pristine wilderness that lies beyond its streets. Discover the city and its surroundings, and go in search of the Northern Lights - the celestial phenomenon that completes the wonder of a visit to this fascinating corner of Europe for anyone lucky enough to see it.
WHAT DOES THE PRICE INCLUDE?
Day One: Fly from the UK to Norway
Fly to Tromsø, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to your hotel, in heart of the city. Depending on the time you arrive, you may have time get to know your surroundings and enjoy a first evening in the city. You'll find welcoming cafes and bars are everywhere, and the city's restaurants serve both Arctic specialities and a huge range of international cuisine.
Day Two: Time to explore Tromsø
The largest settlement beyond the Arctic Circle, Tromsø, is a delightful city to wander around, wrapped up against the cold. Breathe the pure Arctic air as you discover how the city compensates for the short days of winter. Explore the market held daily in the Stortorget main square, and enjoy the sight of fresh Arctic fish being landed on the busy quayside. Elsewhere on the waterfront, Tromsø's aquarium, Polaria, which also shows films exploring Arctic life and nature, and Mack, the world's northernmost brewery, draw fascinated visitors. Take the cable car to the summit of Mount Storsteinen for unsurpassed views, and the chance to enjoy a snack or even dinner at the top station.
During the winter months, the city’s indoor attractions come into their own. The Polar Museum pays tribute to intrepid Arctic pioneers, trappers and explorers, including the Norwegian heroes Amundsen and Nansen. East of the city centre stands the stunning, strikingly modern Ishavskatedralen (Arctic Cathedral) with its vast stained-glass window and organ built in the shape of a ship. The compact Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum features works by Norwegian artists, including Edvard Munch, while lovers of modern art will find much to admire in the striking contemporary collection at the Tromsø Kunstforening (Art Association).
Throughout your stay in Tromsø you'll have time to choose from an exciting range of optional excursions. These include exciting husky or snowmobile safaris, a Sami Reindeer Experience during which you’ll meet local herders and their animals and enjoy a short sleigh ride, a fjord cruise, and a coastal wildlife safari offering close-up encounters with Arctic wildlife from on board a rigid inflatable.
Day Three: Included Aurora Base Station excursion
Today you'll be free to explore the city some more, or join one of the exciting optional excursions on offer. Probably the highlight of your visit, though, will be this evening's included excursion to an Aurora Base Station, one of several locations that offer the best chances of glimpsing the extraordinary sight of the Northern Lights as they flicker across the skies.
After a comfortable coach carries you to the Base Station you'll have time to scan the - hopefully clear - skies and horizon and await the arrival of the dancing lights that form as solar particles enter earth’s atmosphere. With an introductory film shown on the coach, the expert knowledge of a local guide, a warm shelter, blankets (and - weather permitting - a campfire), hot drinks and traditional sweet cakes to enjoy, your Aurora Base Station visit promises to be a unique experience, hopefully capped by views of the amazing Aurora.
Day Four: Fly back to the UK
Your wonderful time in Tromsø comes to an end, today, though you'll still have time to enjoy one last exciting excursion before you transfer back to Tromsø Airport to board your flight home.
Hotel transfer times
The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour and 30 minutes from Girona Airport and two hours and 30 minutes from Barcelona Airport.
Combining hotel transfers
We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.
Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.
If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.
The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
