Detailed Itinerary

All days not listed are spent at sea enjoying the excellent facilities aboard Magellan. Ports of call may be subject to change.

Day One

Fly overnight to Auckland to join your cruise, and enjoy a two-night stay here before you set sail. The city is the world's largest Polynesian settlement, where some 20 per cent of the inhabitants are of Maori or South Pacific descent. Perhaps take in Auckland Museum's priceless carvings and artefacts, or visit the 328-metre Sky Tower, the country's tallest structure.

Day Seven

Crossing the Cook Strait, Magellan makes a last New Zealand call in the nation's cosmopolitan capital, Wellington. You'll find striking modern architecture, colourful Botanic Gardens and a host of bars, restaurants and cafes here, before the ship turns west and heads across the Tasman Sea.

Days 12-14

Vibrant, fun-loving Sydney is one of the world's great cities - and its iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge and famous beaches are just the tip of the iceberg in this wonderful place.

Day 16

Magellan calls at privately owned Hamilton Island, in the paradise that is Captain Cook's Whitsundays archipelago (named after the day he arrived in 1770). Spend a lazy day here, take a boat to the other islands in the group or search out one of the glass lifts in the resort hotels for some stupendous views.

Day 17

Bustling former gold town Townsville boasts the impressive Museum of Tropical Queensland, and is not only a gateway into the bush beyond the city but is close to beautiful Magnetic Island, where koala bears can often be seen clinging to the eucalyptus trees.

Days 18-19

Two days in sun-baked Cairns brings opportunities to take a glass-bottomed boat to a coral cay - as this is the stopping-off point for the Great Barrier Reef - or to head inland on an excursion to the magnificent tropical rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands.

Day 24

Sail round the Cape York Peninsula, through the Arafura Sea, to a final Australian call - the classic frontier town, Darwin. Take a shore excursion to discover the swamps, mangroves, resident salt-water crocodiles and ancient aboriginal art of Kakadu National Park, before you bid farewell to Australia.

Day 26

Today, a first Indonesian island call offers the possibility of seeing the fearsome Monitor Lizard. The legendary giant 'dragons' are found only here and neighbouring Rinca, so join a National Park ranger to explore. Magellan sails this afternoon, heading towards the next paradise isle.

Day 27

Landfall is first made in Bali's port of Benoa, a welcoming and colourful place. Go ashore by tender to discover some of the delights of the south of the island, or take an excursion to explore further afield.

Day 29

A fascinating old town, and a colourful Chinese quarter, are among the attractions in the former Dutch colonial outpost of Semerang, Java. A shore excursion will offer the opportunity to discover the world's biggest Buddhist shrine, at Borobudur.

Day 30

The former Spice Trade port of Jakarta is now one of South East Asia's most dynamic, ultra-modern cities. Its Dutch colonial past includes the Old Harbour's pinisi schooners, historic warehouses and the 18th-century City Hall. See the golden-tipped National Monument and perhaps the National Museum, a treasure-chest of Chinese and Asian artefacts.

Day 33

A cruise through the South China Sea brings Magellan to oil-rich Brunei, with its preserved rainforests and its capital Bandar Seri Begawan. Highlights include the stupendous Omar Saifuddien Mosque and the Royal Regalia Building (housing the Sultan's priceless treasures). And no visit is complete without a trip to the delightful water village at Kampong Ayer.

Day 34

Idyllic Kota Kinabalu is the principal settlement of the state of Sabah, close to Malaysia's highest peak, and another delightful mix of Chinese, Malay, expatriate European and local culture. Take a shore excursion into the interior before Magellan turns north to head across the South China Sea.

Day 36

Raised from the ruins of WWII, the prosperous capital of the Philippines is a jaw-dropping, cosmopolitan melting pot of cultures. While Old Manila provides an insight to the city's past, and the restored cathedral reflects its status as Asia's largest Christian settlement, reminders of its long-term ties with the west can be seen throughout.

Days 38-39

Two full days in the shadow of Hong Kong's amazing skyline bring ample opportunities to discover this exciting metropolis. Explore under your own steam, or choose from optional excursions - to view the skyscrapers from Victoria Peak, visit the floating city of Aberdeen and colourful Stanley Market, cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, or take in the North Shore's spectacular skyline and buzzing Nathan Road.

After a wonderful visit, be on deck as Magellan sails away from the incomparable skyline and heads south.

Day 41

Crossing the Qiongzhou or Hainan Strait between the Leizou peninsula and Hainan Island, Magellan cruises into bewitching, UNESCO-listed Halong Bay, where countless limestone pillars and cone-shaped islands rise out of the water in a spectacular seascape.

An optional shore excursion offers a trip to the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. Here you'll find labyrinthine '36 Streets', tranquil Hoan Kiem Lake and its island Ngoc Son Temple. Other highlights might include the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the former leader's traditional house, the fascinating Museum of Ethnology and the colourful Dong Xuan market.

Day 43

Today, Magellan calls in the tiny port of Chan May, gateway to central Vietnam's stunning beaches and ancient treasures. Take a shore excursion, perhaps to pretty riverside Hoi An, with its preserved traditional buildings, or to the enchanting imperial city of Hue, where royal pavilions and the tombs of emperors hide behind its imposing walls.

Days 45-46

An overnight stay in Vietnam's famous Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), brings opportunities to join fascinating optional shore excursions. Visit the remarkable Cu Chi tunnel complex - a former Viet Cong base - or the Mekong Delta's scenic landscape of rice paddies, orchards and colourful market towns.

Days 48-49

Conclude your South China Sea passage with an overnight stay in Singapore - gleaming island-city and former British colonial outpost. Remnants of its history - in Little India, China Town, the Colonial District and Raffles Hotel - meet glitzy malls and Marina Bay's futuristic wonders. Shop and sightsee or join optional excursions to experience it all.

Day 50

Cruising along the Malaysian coast, Magellan calls at historic Port Klang, gateway to Kuala Lumpur. The Malay capital itself boasts the sky-piercing Petronas Towers among its spectacular sights, and a shore excursion will reveal this buzzing, cosmopolitan city, where the preserved Old Railway Station contrasts with glitzy new developments.

Day 51

Colourful, Malaysian Penang is a feast for the senses. Step ashore to discover sensational street food, George Town's traditional Chinese shophouses, stunning beaches and breathtaking tropical gardens.

Day 52

Island paradise Phuket has luxurious developments, rubber plantations and a bustling main town. Enjoy a last 'taste of the east', or perhaps a last visit to an idyllic beach, before Magellan heads across the Andaman Sea and into the Indian Ocean.

Day 56

Arrive in the Indian sub-continent at Chennai, formerly 'Madras', the country's fourth-largest city. 'Clive of India' once worked here, at historic Fort St George, as a humble clerk for the East India Company.

Optional shore excursions will reveal relics of the Raj at the Fort Museum, Marina Beach, the Chepauk Cricket Stadium and St Mary's Church, the oldest British building in India, or Kanchipuram, a city of 1000 temples, renowned for its exquisite hand-woven silks and saris.

Day 58

This afternoon Magellan calls in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. Explore the restored Fort area of this bustling city, and the ancient street markets of Pettah, or perhaps to take a shore excursion into the lush, temple-studded countryside.

Day 60

Male is the island capital of the idyllic Maldives archipelago. Dominated by the dome of the Friday Mosque, and a wonderfully colourful, bustling place, it's the last Asian call before Magellan heads across the Arabian Sea.

Day 64

After yet more relaxing days aboard your floating home, you'll arrive in Salalah, the 'Perfume Capital of Arabia'. The Sultanate of Oman's second city, this ancient settlement is also gateway to a landscape of frankincense trees and coconut palms. Step ashore to explore or perhaps visit the ruins of ancient Khor Rori.

Ship Information

At 46,000-tonnes and with a passenger complement of around 1100, spacious Magellan retains a sense of traditional cruising and small-ship intimacy, thanks to the beautiful layout and tasteful contemporary style of her public areas, and of course the presence of her friendly, welcoming crew and cruise staff. A major refit in 2010 has ensured her position as a thoroughly modern, bright and supremely comfortable floating home, and she is a hugely welcome addition to the fleet.
