Fairy-tale villages and the grand Carpathian Mountains are the backdrop to a memorable exploration of Romania’s UNESCO-listed treasures.
Bookend your exploration of Transylvania’s medieval wonders with two nights in the bustling Bucharest on this wish-list escape across breathtaking Romania. Fly first to the country’s marvellous capital, where you’ll be greeted by your friendly local tour manager and transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city. Soak up the city’s Belle Epoque, Art Nouveau and Soviet-era sights on a guided tour and explore the Palace of Parliament, before heading into Transylvania, the legendary setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Sibiu is your next stop, and you’ll have time to explore its colourful Saxon buildings on a guided walk around the city centre. You’ll have the opportunity, here, to enhance your introduction to Transylvania with a visit to the ASTRA National Museum Complex, where you’ll enjoy a deeper insight into the traditional dwellings and ways of life that have shaped the Romanian countryside.
Mark the midpoint of your holiday with a visit to rural Hamba, where you’ll visit an apiary for a tasting session of local honeys, before taking in Biertan, home to one of Romania’s great churches. Your next stop, Sighișoara, further showcases the region’s Saxon heritage, and you’ll join your tour manager for another insightful walk through the city. Driving south through the Carpathians, you’ll take in the charming Saxon enclave of Viscri, home to one of King Charles III’s private houses. Stop in Brașov, taking part in your fourth and final guided city tour, and marvel at its exquisite Gothic landmarks. The next day will introduce the resident animals of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, ahead of a visit to Bran castle, the apparent inspiration for the Dracula legend. Spend the next day taking in the popular alpine resort of Sinaia, with stops at remarkable Peleș Castle and nearby Sinaia Monastery. Complete your tour in Tulcea, the gateway to the wildlife-rich Danube Delta, where you’ll learn about the local wildlife and set sail for animal sightings of your own on the wetlands.
