Classic China

Marvel at the ancient imperial wonders, ultra-modern cities, and natural glories of the ‘Middle Kingdom’ on this thrilling introduction to China.

A diverse selection of China’s most recognisable sights is showcased across this 12-day itinerary, the ideal starting point for first-time visitors to this remarkable country. Start your tour with a flight to Beijing, where you’ll be welcomed by your tour manager ahead of a Peking duck dinner, one of the city’s culinary specialities. The next day of your tour will highlight two of the city’s most significant UNESCO-listed landmarks, the vast Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Continue your exploration of Beijing the following day with stops at the Summer Palace and the iconic Great Wall of China. After a third night in the Chinese capital, ride a high-speed train to Xi’an and witness the world-famous Terracotta Army ahead of an optional Tang Dynasty Show and an included dumpling dinner. Xi’an was the capital of China for over 1,000 years, and the next day will be spent taking in its historic centre ahead of a southwestern rail journey into Sichuan Province.

Stop for two nights in Chengdu, where you’ll come face-to-face with the region’s most impressive species on a tour of the Chengdu Panda Research Base. Finish your time in Sichuan Province with a visit to the People’s Park and Kuanzhai Alley, with its Qing-dynasty buildings, before settling in for a traditional hot pot dinner. Continue by rail to Guilin the next day and soak up the striking natural beauty of Guangxi Province’s karst-strewn riverside landscapes. Yangshuo is next, and there’ll be an opportunity to immerse yourself in Guangxi Province’s distinctive regional culture with an optional evening at the Impression Liu Sanjie show. The next day starts with a local village visit and continues with a walk along the River Yulong and a cruise on the River Li. Afterwards, fly to neon-lit Shanghai. This cosmopolitan city, China’s commercial hub, will be yours to explore with a guided afternoon sightseeing tour, and there’ll be time for a few more wish-list sights with a second excursion on your final day before heading to the airport.
