Itinerary

Day One

Fly to Johannesburg, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to Lesedi Cultural Village for a two-night stay in traditional surroundings. Enjoy a light meal and your first night under African skies.

Day Two

Today you'll pay fascinating visits to historic Liliesleaf and Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum. The 28-acre farmstead served as the underground headquarters of the African National Congress and Umkhonto we Sizwe (the 'Spear of the Nation', or 'MK) until the imprisonment of the organisations' leaders, including Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, and the award-winning site and Johanessburg's moving Apartheid Museum provide the historical background to today's democratic South Africa. This evening, enjoy the hospitality of your Lesedi hosts, who will introduce their cultures, show you their homes and demonstrate traditional music and dancing.

Day Three

Journey from Gauteng province into Mpumalanga, the awe-inspiring 'Land of the Rising Sun' bordered by the vast Kruger National Park. You'll overnight at the newly refurbished Shalati Kruger Lodge, in authentic tented 'safari' accommodation, enjoying a sunset game drive into the pristine Manyeleti Private Game Reserve, with, weather permitting, a 'Bush Braai' dinner and the chance to take in the amazing night sky.

Day Four

Beginning the day with a guided bush walk and bush breakfast, you'll then head into the famous Kruger National Park, Africa's oldest wildlife conservation area and home to the world's greatest concentration of wildlife species in their natural habitat. From your open-topped vehicle - and with luck - you might encounter impala, wildebeest, giraffe and zebra, and the 'Big Five' of lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and buffalo. Following the Drive, you'll exit the Park and drive on to the overnight accommodation for the next two nights, enjoying dinner on arrival.

Day Five

Another unforgettable day sees you journey on Mpumalanga's awe-inspiring Panorama Route, one of Africa's most scenic drives, with highlights including preserved 'gold rush' town Pilgrim's Rest, and the mountain passes overlooking Blyde River Canyon. Gaze in wonder at the view from 'God's Window', and take in the strange rock formations of the Three Rondavels and the colourful sandstone outcrops of Bourke's Luck Potholes, before returning for dinner.

Day Six

Today you'll cross the border into the tiny Kingdom of Swaziland, a British Protectorate until 1968, and still boasting a colonial feel with traditional heritage, and the friendly, warm Swazi welcome to visitors. En-route, you'll stop at curio shops and cultural centres, before continuing on into Kwazulu-Natal and a two-night stay.

Day Seven

A fascinating day sees you join a specialist battlefields guide who will introduce you to the tumultuous history of the Zulu Wars, and to the battlefields of Isandlwana and, most famously, Rorke's Drift, the latter immortalised (not necessarily wholly accurately) in the 1964 movie 'Zulu'. A fascinating day includes lunch, before you return to the hotel in time for dinner.

Day Eight

An early start this morning sees you return to Johannesburg airport and a flight south to bustling, 'Friendly City' Port Elizabeth. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your overnight hotel. This popular, modern beach-resort still offers glimpses of Victorian grandeur among its colourful attractions, and there are plenty of restaurants should you wish to dine out.

Day Nine

Begin your journey along the famously scenic 'Garden Route' to Knysna, set on the bank of a beautiful lagoon, against a backdrop of wooded hills, its Victorian and Georgian houses brimming with character and style. An included tour features a ferry to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, across the lagoon, and home to some 200 fish species and a rare seahorse. Enjoy a nature drive to Western Head for spectacular views, and lunch in the shade of milkwood trees. Check into your hotel for a two-night stay, and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 10

Today sees you visit sun-blessed Oudtshoorn, the 'Ostrich Capital of the World', in the heart of the 'Little Karoo' plain. The world's strangest, largest and often most valuable bird has been farmed here for 130 years, first for its plumage - Edwardian farmers built handsome 'Feather Palaces' with the proceeds - and more recently for its high-protein, low-cholesterol meat, samples of which will be offered at lunchtime. Enjoy another relaxing evening in beautiful Knysna.

Day 11

Today sees you head along the Garden Route to historic, sleepy harbour town Mossel Bay, then on to Atlantic coast town Hermanus, a famed whale-watching centre from July to November. See the mighty mammals from the shoreline before turning inland and heading into the beautiful, verdant Cape Winelands region, for a two-night stay in a hotel overlooking the Stellenbosch mountains.

Day 12

Enjoy today's tour of the Winelands, with their vineyard-covered hills and valleys dotted with villages built in 'Cape Dutch', Edwardian and Art-Deco styles. After exploring Stellenbosch, call at Franschhoek, the culinary capital of the Western Cape, and scenic Paarl, and enjoy wine tasting, a cellar tour, and the opportunity to purchase some excellent wines before continuing to Cape Town, for a last three-night stay.

Day 13

On a last touring day, travel along the Atlantic coast and, weather permitting, take the Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the world's most thrilling coastal roads, into the Cape Point Peninsula. See treacherous Cape Point, in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and Boulders Beach, with its colony of Jackass penguins, and after a lunch stop in Simon's Town, overlooking False Bay, visit the magnificent Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, nestled at the eastern foot of Table Mountain. This evening, enjoy the delights of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the city's most popular attraction, with its shops, theatres, bars and restaurants.

Day 14

Today is free to rest and relax and enjoy the city, perhaps enjoying a walking tour through the historic Bo-Kaap district of Dutch colonial houses, strolling through the horticultural paradise of The Company's Gardens, catching a catamaran to infamous Robben Island, or making an unforgettable ascent of Table Mountain, taking in the 360-degree panorama from a rotating cable car as it climbs to the 1000-metre high summit, with its stupendous views of the city and beyond.

Day 15

Make the most of your last morning in Cape Town, then transfer to the airport to board your overnight flight home.

Day 16

Arrive home at the end of a truly unforgettable holiday.

Classic South Africa Touring Hotels

The hotels used on our tours will meet the standard of a good, three-star European hotel. Rooms will have private bathrooms, telephones and TV. The vast majority will also have tea- and coffee-making facilities. There will always be a bar or restaurant on site or nearby.

Further Information

Featherbed Nature Reserve

Recent bush fires mean that we will not be able to visit Featherbed Nature Reserve in 2017. The visit will be replaced by a cruise off the shores of the reserve and a visit to Tsitsikamma National Park. We expect Featherbed to reopen in time for our 2018 departures.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Please note that 2017 departures will depart from the UK on the evening prior to the first day shown on the day-by-day itinerary and arrive into Johannesburg the following morning.

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour.

Passports and visas

A visa is not required for UK citizens travelling to South Africa, but your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date of entry to the country and have two adjacent blank pages. Special entry rules apply for children under 18 years.

Luggage allowance

You are permitted to take one suitcase per person on the aircraft, which should not exceed 23kg.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Travel vaccinations

Requirements and advice can vary over time, and from person to person, so please contact your GP about eight weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or any other preventive measures.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.
