Founded more than 300 years ago, San Antonio, Texas, is one of the oldest cities in the USA's south.

It is also one of the most pleasant, with cobbled streets and historic buildings including dramatic churches and Spanish colonial architecture. At the centre of the city sits the famous Alamo Mission, the site of the 1836 battle where national heroes such as Davy Crockett and James Bowie fell. Now an icon of Texan independence, a visit to the 300-year-old fortress is one of the most popular things to do in San Antonio.

In addition to its historical landmarks, this thriving and cosmopolitan city has a wealth of cultural attractions to take advantage of, including a world-class art museum, the open-air Arneson River Theater and the San Antonio Botanical Garden. There is also the San Antonio Riverwalk, which stretches for 2.5 miles and is home to an excellent variety of restaurants and bars nestled next to shady oak trees and pretty waterways.
