Jackson, Mississippi is a city that isn’t easily defined.

The state capital is home to artsy neighbourhoods like Fondren, a hub of local music and with an area with a distinct international outlook. Then there’s its busy Downtown, packed to the brim with many of the better-known Jackson Mississippi landmarks, notably the museums that call this settlement home. In fact, the only thing you’re sure to find in all the Jackson neighbourhoods are restaurants serving up the best of traditional Southern cooking.

The Mississippi Museum of Art is the largest museum in the entire state and houses a collection of unique works from local and international artists, ranging from collages to sculptures. While you can’t visit Jackson and miss out on its museums, that’s not all the city has to offer. LeFleur’s Bluff State Park is perched on the edge of the city limits but feels like it could be a million miles away. Aside from its expansive grounds, which include hiking trails, a campsite, and a 9-hole golf course, it is also home to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. A truly tranquil experience – even with the gators swimming about!

Things to see in Jackson

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum may have only been open a few years, but it already feels more vital to the city than ever. The exhibits are incredibly detailed and the artefacts are well organised.

Eudora Welty was one of America’s finest short story writers, with her home now being a museum and gardens dedicated to her life and works. The gardens are stunningly manicured, and the house lovingly restored – even if you’re not a fan, after a visit you’re sure to come away with an appreciation of this literary genius.

Mississippi was one of the epicentres of the Blues movement: the infamous, influential, and incredible music first created in the late 19th-century by African Americans. Make sure you catch a gig, even if it is just a local band.

Things to do in Jackson

The Old Capitol Museum is housed in the Old Mississippi State Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark. The astounding architecture is worth seeing on its own, but the museum is one of the best in the city.

A visit to the Jackson Zoo in the 110-acre Livingston Park is a must-do on any trip to the city. Home to over 120 species, the delightful Elephant House Café, and with a train running through the complex, it’s the perfect place to spend a day.

LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, right on the banks of the Pearl River, is a lush expanse of grass and woodland that juxtaposes wonderfully with the bustling centre of the city. You can hike, cycle, or even canoe in this space, as well as do a little wildlife spotting.

Food and drink in Jackson

If you love chocolate then the Mississippi Mud Pie is for you.

An explosion of cocoa-goodness, it consists of a chocolate cookie crust, topped with a layer of fudgy cake, and chocolate streusel. Finally, it’s drizzled with ganache to send you into chocolate heaven.

Soul food makes the South. Any homestyle restaurant in Jackson will leave you wanting more (despite the hefty portions), but favourites like fried chicken, cornbread, and okra are not to be missed. A true delight, be prepared to dream of these dishes when you’re back home.
