The road less travelled: Four hidden gems away from the holiday hotspots
Discover vibrant towns and areas of exquisite beauty with a step off the beaten path of the world’s most popular holiday destinations.
It’s no surprise that some destinations are so popular amongst travellers. Whether it’s their striking natural vistas or breath-taking ancient landmarks, there’s a reason that they’ve stood the test of time. That’s not to say, though, that they are the only places to explore when visiting their respective countries – there are plenty of spots that deserve just as many plaudits, but which seem to fly under the radar for many holidaymakers across the globe.
Our team loves being surprised by hidden treasures in the destinations we visit and believe that they deserve far more recognition than they currently get. With that in mind, they’ve been busy at work compiling a list of their absolute favourite hidden gems that you won’t want to miss out on across some of the world’s most popular travel destinations.
Heraklion, Greece
While Greece is dotted with diverse landscapes, world-renowned historical sights and sun-kissed coastlines, one of its best-kept secrets is Crete’s welcoming capital, Heraklion. It promises an array of cultural opportunities with museums and galleries to enjoy on optional guided tours or at your leisure.
With a walk along its seawalls, you can witness panoramic views of the island’s seaside vistas. Those who go the distance will find a quaint lighthouse at the walls’ end. Having explored all the city has to offer, there are few better ways to unwind than with a chilled glass of Cretan wine as you look out over the Aegean Sea.

Segovia, Spain
Spain is home to some of the most popular tourist hotspots across Europe, but you’re just as likely to find memorable experiences among its lesser-known centres. Take the UNESCO-listed old city of Segovia, a forgotten corner of Iberia, for instance. This charming hub is only an hour's drive from Madrid, and showcases Castille and Leon’s rich blend of cultural influence better than most.
Witness the town’s 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct, soak up the Plaza de Medina del Campo’s Spanish atmosphere and marvel at the spectacular 12th-century Catholic church. If memorable sights are on the agenda, don’t miss out on touring the city’s crowning landmark, the enchanting Alcazar of Segovia, for the ideal end to your time in Castille.
Our recommended tour: Madrid, Toledo & Salamanca
Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Despite being one of the most travelled routes in Central Asia, Uzbekistan has since become one of the continent’s more obscure holiday destinations, and it certainly deserves more recognition. Filled with scenic wonders and ancient sights, the breath-taking home of the Silk Road proudly bears the hallmarks of its mercantile past with its colourful trading domes and grand city fortifications. Samarkand is one such city and promises exquisite sights from sprawling Registan Square to the ornate Guri Amir Mausoleum.
For the perfect introduction to this city, stroll around the Siyob Bazaar, Samarkand’s largest marketplace, or take in the ancient relics and artworks housed in the nearby Afrosiyab Museum.

Vilnius, Lithuania
The Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, is a European treasure that often goes under the radar. It’s a city with a rich religious heritage, and visitors can discover its Baroque wonders, from Vilnius Cathedral to the Palace of the Grand Dukes, with a leisurely walk through its charming old town. The imposing Gates of Dawn, and the churches of St. Anne, St. Bernadine and St. Michael, top the city’s historic Christian treasures, and are a must-see for pilgrims and culture buffs alike.
What’s more, Vilnius makes up only a small section of the Baltics and offers easy access to neighbouring Estonia and Latvia. With that in mind, no trip to the region would be complete without also taking in the thriving commercial hub of Tallinn or metropolitan Riga, too!
