Inside our itineraries: Talking wish-list Italian escapes with a customer
Find out how one of our customer’s childhood dreams came true on their recent visit to the enchanting Italian Lakes with the latest addition to our Q&A series.
It’s no secret that Italy boasts some of the most sought-after destinations in Europe, and where better to experience la dolce vita than around its charming northern lakes. From the romantic alleys of Venice and Verona to the vast alpine vistas that range across the Italian Lakes region, there’s a lot to love about this charming corner of Europe.
We've been speaking to two of our customers, Jackie and Douglas, to find out how they got on with a particularly special trip. The couple recently discovered that one of their paintings, which Jackie grew up with, depicted a real island in Italy, Isola dei Pescatori, and decided to see it for themselves on an escorted tour. From their favourite highlights to the emotional impact the trip had on them, here’s what they had to say.
1. What was it like finally visiting Isola dei Pescatori after imagining it for so many years?
I wish I could describe my feelings approaching the island. From having imagined myself visiting it as a child to finding out it’s a real island and finally seeing it in real life, it was so magical and emotional.
2. How did the painting that inspired your trip come to life when you saw the island in person?
I think I was holding my breath as we watched it come closer on the boat. It is exactly as it is on the painting – with no other buildings, and such an old-world charm. It was a beautiful day, despite being overcast on our arrival, and the island is small enough to explore during our time on it.
3. Did your tour make it easy to explore the lakes and reach the island?
The tour was perfect for this trip. We also visited Isola Bella, which was outstandingly beautiful, as per the name, and Lake Como. I would love to return with my family.
4. What stood out most about Isola dei Pescatori when you wandered its streets and shoreline?
Call me superstitious, but there was a little bird that hopped in front of us, stopped, and waited until we caught up then it did the same thing. We followed it across a little bridge, and it led us to one of the most beautiful areas of the island. The bird left us once we got there, but it really looked as though it wanted us to follow it!
We were also struck by how clean it was and surprised at the number of birds on a small island. Although lots of people were visiting, it didn't feel busy, and there was always a spot to sit and have a private moment.
5. Aside from the island, which parts of Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda did you enjoy most on the tour?
Both lakes are beautiful in their own right, but Lake Maggiore was my favourite because of the island. I also loved Sirmione at Lake Garda and Stresa at Lake Maggiore, where we had a wonderful view from a sky bar after one trip. My partner particularly loved walking along the shorelines of both lakes and the boat trips, and we’d love to revisit Lake Como.
6. Were there any excursions included in the trip that felt extra special or memorable?
There were so many excursions, and all of them were special and memorable in their own ways. From the tours of the Dolomites and Venice to wine tasting at Barolo and a visit to Verona, all gave us such precious memories.
7. How would you describe the accommodation, food, and travel arrangements during your two-centre holiday?
The accommodation and food were superb. We always got a warm and friendly welcome with both buffet and table service and thought it was good that they let us know the evening meal in advance each morning so that we could choose to dine out if we weren’t keen. Overall, the accommodation was great at both hotels, and we still talk about the food to this day!
8. How did the Newmarket Holidays tour manager help make your trip smoother or more enjoyable?
I can’t stress enough how much our tour manager and guides enhanced our holiday experience. They were warm, approachable, and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, and they are so knowledgeable. Although we had the most fantastic holiday, it wouldn't have been half as good without the tour guides and the lovely group of travellers we were with.
9. Was there a highlight moment that really captured the magic of travelling on this particular tour?
It’d have to be the island, Isola dei Pescatori – a dream come true. It still seems unreal to me now.
10. Would you recommend this tour to other travellers, and if so, why?
We would definitely recommend Newmarket Holidays and this specific tour to others. There is something for everyone. So many varied areas in Italy and Switzerland. The pressure of moving from site to site is all taken care of, and you have expert local knowledge on tap with the tour manager. I would return in a heartbeat and can’t wait to visit Croatia with the company next month!
