Home to vast glacial valleys, volcanic peaks and sprawling hot springs, Iceland is one of Europe’s most dramatic destinations and deserves a spot atop any travel wish-list. With Newmarket Holidays, you can see its finest sights at the very best time of the year, from the spellbinding Northern Lights to the unique landmarks of the island nation’s memorable capital, Reykjavík.

As part of the ‘Inside our itineraries’ series, we spoke to Dean, one of our Product Managers for Europe, for some of his top tips on how to best enjoy a stay in this fascinating country. As someone who lives and breathes all things Iceland, here’s what he had to say:

1. What is the best season for an Iceland tour, and what weather should customers expect?

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between November and March, and the weather can be extremely changeable.

2. How should customers pack for the weather?

Due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, it’s best to bring layers of clothing, including thermals, gloves, a hat and comfortable, waterproof shoes.

3. What are the main highlights of a tour to Iceland?

Undoubtedly, the Northern Lights, one of nature’s greatest shows, is a spectacular sight to see! In addition, the powerful waterfalls and geysers, along with the world-famous Blue Lagoon, are not to be missed.

4. What is the physical activity level of the Iceland tour?

Minimal, most of the adventuring takes place in between using our comfortable coaches with only a few minutes of walking at each point of interest.

5. What type of accommodation is provided on the Iceland tour?

We offer a choice of two hotels, the Hotel Cabin which is just outside of Reykjavík and has superior rooms reserved for us, or in a more central location, the Hotel Klettur.

6. Are there opportunities to see the Northern Lights?

Absolutely! Our tour is all about the Northern Lights.

7. Can customers add on unique activities like glacier hiking or whale watching?

The fourth day of our tour is free to explore independently, although we find that many of our customers book our Southern Shore Adventure – it’s up to them to decide.

8. What type of food can customers expect on an Iceland tour?

The Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, is truly a cosmopolitan city, and caters for every taste, from stalls selling hot dogs, such as the Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, to a number of Michelin-starred restaurants.

9. Is there free time for self-exploration or is the itinerary packed?

There is plenty of time to explore the capital city Reykjavík and a free day on the penultimate day, should customers not join our optional tour, to sightsee at leisure.

10. Will there be a knowledgeable guide on hand?

Yes! We have our own Newmarket Holidays tour manager who is on hand throughout the tour, and specialist local guides on all excursions. The Northern Lights excursion even uses specialist equipment to check for gaps in the cloud and changing weather conditions to ensure our customers have the best chance of viewing the Northern Lights.
