Newmarket Holidays

Whether you’re a train enthusiast or want to kick back in comfort as you soak up Europe’s finest sights, this is your sign to embrace a more leisurely way to travel.

While beach retreats and city breaks continue to top the lists for holidaymakers this year, rail travel has emerged as a popular alternative for those in search of a more laid-back time abroad. Boasting panoramic views, stress-free journeys, and stops in some of Europe and the UK’s most picturesque, rural towns, there’s so much to love about exploring by train.

From the far-reaching fjord of Western Norway to Portugal’s rolling vineyards, we’re blessed to have some of the world’s most scenic corners within easy reach, and there’s no better way to explore each breath-taking vista than by train. Our team has ranked their top seven rail journeys that simply must be seen to be believed.

1. The West Highland Line, Scotland

In the far north of the British Isles resides one of the most picturesque routes in the entire continent. Across loch and glen, the Scottish Highlands’ major attractions promise scenic beauty and historical insights in equal measure, and the acclaimed West Highland Line railway is no exception. Tracing a path from Glasgow to the harbour town of Mallaig, this enchanting route introduces guests to the natural and man-made wonders of Scotland’s rugged western stretches. From the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, which famously featured in the wildly popular Harry Potter series, to the lofty peaks of Ben Nevis and serene Loch Ness, you’ll never be short of wish-list sights with a journey on the West Highland Line. While in Scotland, why not also take a trip aboard the heritage Strathspey Steam Railway for a glimpse back into the golden age of steam?

Our recommended tour: Scottish Highland Railways

2. The Snaefell Mountain Railway, Isle of Man

First built in 1895, this remarkable train route has served the Isle of Man for over a century and remains the UK's only electric mountain railway. Those journeying up grand Snaefell Mountain aboard one of the route's ornate carriages can expect authentic Victorian charm and memorable views over the Manx countryside abound. On a clear day, as you approach the summit, you might even be able to see the mountain's fabled 'Seven Kingdoms' – England, Wales, Scotland, The Isle of Man and Ireland, plus heaven and the wide Irish Sea! From here, the island offers incredibly easy exploration with a number of antique electric tramways connecting Snaefell with the charming towns of Laxey, Ramsey and Douglas.

Our recommended tour: Historic Railways of the Isle of Man

3. The Flåmsbana, Norway

Across to Norway’s western fjords now, and few European rail journeys are as memorable as Flåm’s iconic standard-gauge mountain railway. Considered one of the steepest routes of its kind in the world, this magnificent journey takes customers through hand-carved tunnels and spectacular alpine landscapes. What’s more, with its spectacular frozen vistas in the winter and flourishing summertime landscapes, the Flåmsbana promises extraordinary alpine landscapes throughout the year.

Our recommended tour: The Beautiful Fjords of Western Norway

3. The Bernina Express, Italy

Encompassing the highest rail crossing in the Alps at the Bernina Pass, together with one of the steepest railway descents in Europe, where the train winds its way down 5,000ft of track in just 25 miles, a ride on the Bernina Express is a truly extraordinary experience. Running from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano, just across the Italian border, the Bernina Express passes an extraordinary variety of scenery, from alpine glaciers and snow-capped mountains to vineyards and palm trees. For an even more memorable experience, consider a ride aboard one of the train’s panoramic open-air carriages to get closer than ever to the majestic scenery of the Italian Alps.

Our recommended tour: Lake Como, St. Moritz & the Bernina Express

4. The GoldenPass Express, Switzerland

Embodying Swiss elegance, the GoldenPass Express promises a decadent take on rail travel and serves the finest local produce onboard to better immerse its passengers in the charming alpine landscapes they pass. Connecting two of the Bernese Oberland’s largest lakes, Thun and Brienz, with the Lake Geneva region, this journey highlights the finest lakeside resort of southern Switzerland. From the lakeside resort of Interlaken to Montreux, a playground of Europe’s rich and famous, there’s no finer way to explore the Alps than kicking back with a hand-selected local wine pairing in the comfort of your carriage.

Our recommended tour: Swiss Alpine Glories & the GoldenPass Train

5. Le Petit Train Jaune, France

Though perhaps overlooked by holidaymakers in Spain and France, the glorious Pyrenees will have you spoilt for choice of heritage railways to enjoy. While each route boasts its own distinctive character and impressive highlights, le Petit Train Jaune (Little Yellow Train) stands out as the region’s best. Taking in UNESCO-listed Villefranche-de-Conflent and the lofty heights of Bolquere-Eynea ahead of a final stop amongst the citadels of Mont Louis, a ride aboard the Little Yellow Train has no shortage of scenic highlights to feast your eyes on. Better yet, you’ll be perfectly placed to hop aboard one of the region’s other heritage lines, from the Red Train to Nuria’s spectacular rack railway.

Our recommended tour: Little Trains of the Pyrenees

6. The Douro Historical steam train, Portugal

For a more leisurely experience on the rails, few spots compare to the idyllic Douro Valley, and the Douro Historical Train promises the perfect introduction to the region. Combining culinary treats, courtesy of a charming collection of vineyards, farms and adegas (wine cellars), with delightful riverside vistas, a journey along this route embraces the agricultural heritage and historic highlights of the Douro.

Our recommended tour: Little Trains of the Douro
