Inside our Itineraries Q&A series: Beyond the bushveld with a safari expert
Make the most of your safari experience with insider knowledge courtesy of our trusted partner, Involv Africa, and their specialist guide, Jaco van der Westhuizen.
From Cape Town to the majestic Blyde River Canyon, South Africa’s breath-taking natural landscapes are amongst the most impressive in the world. What’s more, with enlightening cultural excursions and thrilling animal encounters around every corner, there really is something to suit all tastes.
Nothing we say, however, can really do the magic of being on safari justice – you simply have to experience it for yourself. With that in mind, our team have been talking to the people who know safaris best, our partners at Involv Africa, and have had the pleasure of talking to one of their expert drivers, Jaco van der Westhuizen. With useful tips on how best to enjoy your wildlife-spotting adventure, here’s what he had to say.
What first inspired you to become a safari driver?
I’ve always loved the outdoors and travelling. But it wasn’t until I saw the joy on my daughter’s face as she experienced things for the first time that I truly understood the magic of it. That moment made me realise, this joy is something worth sharing with the world.
How long have you been taking customers on safari?
I started guiding in 2017, so it’s been just over eight years now.
What makes our safari tours stand out?
What I like about Newmarket Holidays’ safaris is that the accommodation is located very close or sometimes even in the parks. Even after the safari ends, you still feel immersed in nature after you leave the park.
If you had to pick one highlight from your time on safari, what would it be?
My absolute safari highlight to date is seeing the "Crazy Eight" on one safari 1. Rhino 2. Elephant 3. Leopard 4. Lions 5. Buffalo 6. Cheetah 7. Hyena 8. Wild Dog.
Do you have any tips for making the most of each safari?
Start as early as possible and end as late as possible.
When would you say is the best time of year to visit?
South Africa is a year-round destination, so there is really never a bad time to visit. I personally prefer the summer, because the days are longer than in winter.
Are there any animals that still excite you when spotting them in the wild? If so, what’s your absolute favourite?
All animals excite me, but naturally the animals you see the least number of times make you feel more excited when you get to spot them in the wild. My favourite animals to watch, though, are elephants.
Do you have any suitcase-essentials for going on safari?
Sunscreen, a camera and a thermos filled with ice cold water.
If you had to pick your favourite national park or private reserve, what would it be and why?
Kruger National Park – I’ve had my best safaris in Kruger National Park, and because of its sheer size, you never know what the day will bring.
Can you recommend any other essential experiences for customers to enjoy while in the country?
Just like South Africa is a year-round destination, it’s also a destination for all people of all ages. What comes to mind when I think of South Africa, though, is Cape Town's Table Mountain, the beaches, the Cape Winelands, great food and all the local cultures.
