A SHOWCASE OF CULINARY & CULTURAL DELIGHTS

Foodies are front of mind on this journey infused with flavours at every turn that captures the culinary expertise of two European hotspots.

Madrid, the starting point for a celebratory crusade of all things culinary and cultural takes you beyond its grand boulevards to reveal the city’s multi-influenced history. Venturing towards the vineyards of the outlying wineries, the tour then travels to award-winning estates, promising plenty of tastings paired with local produce along the way.

A cooking show with a chef, a guided food market excursion and lunch at a traditional Quinta are more highlights on the menu. Porto serves as the final stop, with a chance to seek out its architectural splendours, sip port in a centuries-old wine cellar and sail across the Douro River under the shadows of the seven bridges.

  • Fly to Spain’s capital, Madrid, meet your tour manager and transfer to your hotel. You’ll have time to settle in before joining the other guests and your tour manager for an included dinner.

  • Fuel up on breakfast ahead of an enthralling day of sightseeing. With your tour manager at the helm, you’ll be driven through the streets of Madrid into the heart of the city. You’ll pass by the Puerta del Sol square with its striking clock tower before travelling to Retiro Park, an expansive green oasis and the beautiful Atocha Railway Station, dating back to 1851.

As the afternoon unfolds, you’ll also get to see Jeronimo’s Church, Cibeles Plaza, the world-famous Prado Museum, and Stadium Santiago Bernabéu, which is owned by the Real Madrid Football Club. Your guide will then take you along Serrano Street, also known as the ‘Golden Mile’, lined with luxury flagship stores.

In the evening, you’ll return to your hotel to unwind, perhaps sipping on a cocktail in the lounge.

  • After breakfast, you’ll set off to Ribera del Duero, home to more than 300 wineries and one of Spain’s top red wine-producing regions. The tour will head towards the city of Aranda de Duero, stopping first at the winery, Lagar de Isilla, with its 15th-century underground cavern.

The tour will continue to the fortified town of Penafiel, where you can visit the German Gothic-style castle and the museum. You’ll then be led around the town’s centre on foot, visiting the unique square bullring. Next up is one of the most famous wineries in the region, Bodegas Protos, which is backed by Penafiel Castle and boasts a modern façade.

You’ll then be taken to Valladolid city centre, so you can check into your hotel and drop off your bags. As an introduction to sights, you’ll be taken on a walking tour before going back to your hotel to freshen up.

This evening, you’re in for a treat, as you’ll visit Mercado del Val for tapas tasting, watch a live cooking show and partake in wine tasting with a local chef.

  • Another day of exploration awaits as you’ll check out of the hotel following breakfast and travel towards Salamanca. On the way, you’ll stop over in the region of Rueda, known for its white wines. Upon arriving in Salamanca, you’ll be escorted on a tour of the city, surveying its charming historical town and sandstone cathedral. Just in time for lunch, you’ll have the chance to sample some local cuts of cured ham.

The tour will depart again, driving through Ciudad Rodrigo, with its ornate architecture and 12th-century city walls. You’ll then arrive at your hotel in Meda, embracing some time to rest, perhaps squeezing in a visit to the thermal hot springs before enjoying an included dinner.

  • Even more wine tasting is on the menu today, and after breakfast, you’ll venture to the village of Alijo, which forms part of the Alto Douro Wine region – classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can sample the sweet dessert wine, Moscatel during a tasting. You’ll then visit a bread museum and a local bakery.

A delicious lunch made with fresh ingredients will be served at the winery, Quinta Avessada as you listen to a band playing traditional museum. Afterwards, the tour will travel along the river Douro on the EN222 – considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

After the scenic drive, you’ll arrive at your hotel in Porto, a coastal city of majestic bridges and port houses hugging the riverbanks.

  • Rise and tuck into breakfast before you take to the cobbled streets of Porto on an all-encompassing sightseeing tour. You’ll start by exploring the town centre, overlooked by the Neoclassic city hall with its clocktower and make your way to the São Bento Railway Station, with its enchanting design and tiled interior.

Taking a turn down to the lively riverside, the tour will then travel by boat along the Douro, stopping to visit several port wines cellars, where you can sample the fortified drink for which the city is famed.

As the sun sets, you’ll join your fellow travellers for a special farewell dinner, reminiscing on your travel highlights throughout Spain and Portugal.

  • Say ‘adeus’ to Porto, as you’re transferred to the airport for your flight back home.

Further Information

  • Rules may have changed since you last travelled to European Union countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. Note that these new rules do NOT apply when travelling within the United Kingdom or to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland. You do require government issued ID when travelling by air though.

    Passport

Your passport must meet two requirements to travel to an EU country and to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It must be:

    • Less than 10 years old on the day you return home – please check the "date of issue"
    • Valid for at least 3 months after the day you return home – please check the "expiry date"

These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland where you can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.

    Visa

If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania; if you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total. Travel to Ireland will not change and stays there will not count towards the 90-day total.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)

Towards the end of 2022, it is likely that non EU citizens will be required to apply online for an authorisation to visit most European countries. The current details suggest there will be a charge of €7 per person and the authorisation will be valid for all trips made to the EU in a three year period from issue. We will advise you of confirmed details prior to your tour’s departure.

    Border Control

At border control, you may need to show proof of your return journey - your travel documentation issued by us will be sufficient for this. You will also need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens if manual checks are required.

    Healthcare Cover

You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad which covers pre-existing conditions. You should understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and be happy with its cover for healthcare and travel disruption. Newmarket sell a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Ask our travel consultants for more information.

You should also apply for a UK Global Heath Insurance Card (GHIC) which lets you get urgent state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. Note GHIC is only valid in EU countries and not in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

    Mobile Roaming

Roaming charges are applied by some UK providers when visiting the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Prior to travel, please do check with your phone operator for the most up to date information.
