Look ahead to the most wonderful time of the year with a deep dive into one of our enchanting festive breaks courtesy of our tour manager, Alistair.

Summer might still be going strong, but it’s never too early to get ahead of the curve on this year’s most memorable Christmastime breaks. Whether you’re keen to experience the festivities abroad or simply want a winter break in the company of like-minded travellers, there are wish-list moments abound across Europe’s most enchanting Christmas getaways.

We could speak all day about the joys of a seasonal escape across the continent, but what really sets them apart is the people who make the magic happen on location. That’s where our expert tour managers come in, and we’ve recently had the pleasure of speaking to Alistair, who looks after our Christmas in the Scottish Highlands tour, for a closer look at what goes into each precious moment. We spoke about all things Christmas, from his top excursions to his favourite bits of Scottish trivia to share with his groups.

1. How do you bring the Christmas spirit to life on this tour?

I bring the Christmas spirit right from the start. The coaches are decorated with Christmas decorations, carols are played as we travel, and on occasions, a sing-along is organised. The hotel surpasses itself with gifts, themed entertainment, and excellent à la carte dining. The Christmas dinner is second to none, and the day is filled with laughter, dancing, and an evening buffet.

2. What’s your favourite festive excursion on the itinerary, and why?

The customers and I always enjoy the excursion on Christmas Eve to Loch Ness. The crew of the boat once again play a big part in the festivities – many customers appreciate that. While others face the madness of last-minute shopping, we get to relax amongst breath-taking scenery in the company of newfound friends.

3. Are there any local Christmas traditions or customs that customers should know before they arrive?

Realistically, there aren’t many differences between a Scottish Christmas and one in other parts of the UK. Waking up on Christmas morning in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, though, and hearing the sound of a lone piper playing the bagpipes is magical.

4. Will there be any optional seasonal activities or special local experiences?

The hotel is excellent at providing a wide selection of activities and entertainment to cater for every taste. Quizzes, games, and storytelling are some of the options available. Customers can choose to go to the local church service, and there are several scenic walks which take you along the river.

5. Can you tell us about the accommodation on this tour?

The accommodation is very typical of the Scottish Highlands, and so welcoming. From the moment you walk into the reception and are greeted by a blazing log fire, you’ll feel totally at home.

6. How do you handle dietary needs during festive meals or Christmas-themed dining?

Dietary requirements are second nature to the hotel and staff. In all the years I have experienced this tour, there has never been any issue with special requirements from guests. To be honest, many are pleasantly surprised at the quantity, selection, and high quality of the food.

7. Is there free time built in to explore or buy gifts?

On one of the days, we travel to explore some of the local scenery and visit several attractions (the Caledonian Canal and Spean Bridge, to name but two). We also visit several small towns, and whilst there are not as many shops open, everyone can enjoy the day out, and a chance to "walk off" some of the food eaten over the festive break.

8. How do you make Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feel special for the group?

We make it fun! The hotel staff play a big part in making Christmas Eve and Christmas Day extra special. The fire is blazing, there's a sherry reception, small gifts for everyone, and of course, plenty of music. There is generally a drinks reception before going in for our Christmas dinner, and copious amounts of buck’s fizz for those that want it!

9. What’s your top tip for enjoying the Scottish Highlands in winter?

Top tips for enjoying the Scottish Highlands in winter would be to be prepared. Layers for when you go walking are essential, and come with an appetite! The camaraderie is excellent – people will go for walks with others they've just met, strangers will sit down together next to the fire, and before you know, you’ll be laughing, swapping stories, and creating friendships they may not have expected.

10. What’s one little-known fact or hidden gem you love sharing with customers on this tour?

When I first meet our customers, I usually tell them to be prepared to immerse themselves in the magic of the Highlands. There’s something truly wonderful to see strangers gradually become part of the festive experience.
