1.

Clue: This world-famous landmark is composed of three active volcanoes, but the last time any of them erupted was over 300 years ago.

Answer: Mount Fuji, Japan

This remarkable peak, often shown reflected in the still waters of its surrounding lakes, is a place of enormous cultural significance in Japan, having been featured in countless works of art and literature. It is also considered one of Shinto’s most sacred sites, with shrines and torii gates arranged around its base, and is a popular pilgrimage route.

2.

Clue: These distinctive spires have previously been referred to as ‘Cleopatra’s Needles’ and feature the highest concentration of pumas in the world.

Answer: Torres del Paine, Chile

Translating as the ‘Towers of Blue’, this impressive granite formation has only existed for around 12 million years, making it one of the world’s youngest mountains. Despite its relatively low age, the towers are no less impressive than some of their older neighbours, and have played a key role in drawing visitors to wild Patagonia since the late 19th century.

3.

Clue: Overlooking its home city, this peculiar formation stands out from other peaks around the world due to its completely flat top.

Answer: Table Mountain, South Africa

As a major part of Cape Town’s world-famous skyline, Table Mountain has become as much a tourist attraction as the city’s Dutch colonial landmarks and vibrant V&A Waterfront. With regular transport to and from its summit courtesy of the mountain’s popular aerial cableway, no visit to South Africa’s Western Cape would be complete without taking in the views from above.

4.

Clue: This is one of Europe’s most recognisable mountains and has a legendary reputation in classical mythology.

Answer: Mount Olympus

Though you won’t find Zeus and the rest of the Greek gods at the top of this towering peak, it remains one of the most alluring natural wonders on the Mediterranean, offering views over the Aegean Sea, Thessaly’s sprawling plains and the charming towns of the Greek mainland’s East Coast.

5.

Clue: This marvellous landscape, crowned by its towering peak, is known by two names – one of which means ‘Cloud Piercer’.

Answer: Mount Cook, New Zealand

Named after James Cook, the English explorer who charted much of New Zealand in the late 18th century, this vast alpine landscape is known to local Māori communities as Aoraki (Cloud Piercer). Standing at over 3,000 metres tall, Mount Cook is New Zealand’s tallest peak and has drawn visitors from across the globe to the country’s South Island for centuries.
