The park was founded as Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and became a National Park in February 1919.

Things to see at the Grand Canyon

While the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is more popular, the lesser-visited North Rim is only open for a few months of the year. Totally different to the opposing section, it’s a place of immense solitude and delivers the kind of inspiring natural beauty that will stay with you a lifetime.

Kaibab National Forest is an essential stop-off point on any Grand Canyon trip. Bordering much of the canyon itself, it’s a welcoming wall of green in what’s otherwise a sea of desert. There are plenty of trails to explore, or you can just learn about the local plant and wildlife from the knowledgeable rangers at the visitors centre.

Located on the western reaches of the Canyon, the Skywalk is not for the faint-of-heart. This narrow, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge extends 15m out over the rim into nothingness, allowing the brave to stare at the nearly mile-long drop beneath them.

River rafting down the Colorado River isn’t for everyone, but the water isn’t all raging rapids – in many areas a boating trip can be a serene experience, especially as you get to take in the vast walls of the Canyon.

The Grand Canyon itself is around 23-miles wide at its narrowest, and going around it can take hours. While some like to stay at the top, there’s nothing quite like descending into the earth and exploring the dozens of well-marked trails the national park has to offer.

Having been operating for over a century, it's a must for visitors. They have a number of classic dishes, some of which have been unchanged since the restaurant was inaugurated in the early twentieth century. We would definitely suggest trying the delectable Arizona-grown beef tenderloin.

Although the vast emptiness of the Grand Canyon doesn’t really invoke images of lush greenery and endlessly sprouting plant life, there are plenty of wines produced in close vicinity to the natural wonder. Most restaurants around the canyon offer some of these Arizonian products, so make sure to have a try of the fruits of the desert.
