A first-timers’ guide to Lapland
Lapland promises some of the most enchanting festive experiences in the world but how can you ensure your break is filled with festive cheer?
There are few experiences quite as magical as exploring idyllic Lapland for the first time, and we’re looking forward to welcoming a whole host of new and returning customers to our exclusive resort in Pajala as the year comes to a close. For those who haven’t visited before, though, it can be a destination that raises a few question marks. With that in mind, our team has been drawing on all of their Lapland expertise and have put together this quick and easy guide to making the most of your time in this magnificent corner of the world.
1. What to wear?
The first thing to understand about Lapland is that, as you’d expect, it gets very cold! For that reason, your choice of clothing for the day can make all the difference, and there are some essentials to ensure you have ready beforehand. Upon arrival in the resort, customers are provided with waterproof snowsuits in resort so you can rest assured that you’ll well-protected as you explore the Arctic landscapes. You’ll also have access to specialist boots, perfect for keeping your feet warm and dry as you enjoy the snow.
While the snow suits will keep you warm during your time in the resort, it’s worth remembering that you won’t have access to them during your transfers to and from the airport. For that reason, it’s a good idea to wear a thermal base layer or perhaps a fleece for the travel to and from Pajala. Don’t worry too much about overheating as you’ll be able to safely store any extra layers, shoes and coats at the resort’s central lodge.
Another essential for between transfers is a good pair of shoes with added grip, as the runways and paths around the airport can get slippery. Wearing a pair of thick thermal socks is highly recommended, and other common-sense extras include snoods, winter hats and gloves. While it’s not a deal breaker if you forget them on the aeroplane, keeping yourself wrapped up and protected from the elements, particularly if you plan on playing in the snow, will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout.

2. What to bring?
Besides the clothes you’re wearing, a positive about heading to Lapland is that you won’t need to bring much luggage with you. On our festive daytrips, you’ll be free to leave the travel essentials, from toothbrushes and towels to changes of clothes, at home. While there are places to keep your bags in resort, we always recommend travelling light. That being said, there are a few things that can help make your trip as memorable as possible.
Since you’ll be surrounded by Pajala’s exquisite wintry landscape, bringing a good-quality camera to capture every moment is definitely recommended. Better yet, if you’re lucky enough to spot the Northern Lights, you’ll be able to see them more clearly through a camera lens.
Another thing to be aware of is that your phone batteries are likely to drain quicker in the cold, so it’s a good idea to bring a spare charger, as well as a type C or F plug adapter, if you’re someone who can’t live without their devices. Another great option for keeping your mobile powered is a portable power bank. You can also maximise your device’s battery life by keeping it as warm as possible on your person! Pocket warmers are a bit of an unsung hero in this respect, and also help to keep you comfortable during transfers.
3. What to do first?
You’ll be spoilt for choice for cheer-inspiring activities after arriving in Lapland, and though it can be tempting to let loose in the snow, it’s worth bearing the rest of the day in mind. While you’ll be separated on arrival into scheduled groups for each guided activity, we’d recommend leaving the sledging and snowball fights until later in the day.
As you take in each magical Christmas-themed moment, it’s also important to take time for yourself to keep your energy up throughout the day. While waiting for your private meeting with the Big Man himself, take a break from the cold at one of the resort’s cosy woodland huts for some warming berry juice and biscuits around the fire.

4. How to keep yourself topped up?
To get to Pajala on the morning of your day trip, you’ll fly from your regional airport to Swedish Lapland. Whether you’re travelling with younger family members or are experiencing this wondrous part of the world on your own, your itinerary will keep you active throughout the day. It’s a good idea, therefore, to take a moment where you can to rest and recharge between activities, whether that’s with a freshly baked cinnamon bun at the central lodge or squeezing in a quick nap during your return flight.
As the excitement for your unforgettable day trip builds, your experienced Newmarket Holidays representatives will be on hand to keep the little ones entertained in the air, so sit back, relax, and enjoy a precious few moments to yourself.
5. How can I make the most of my time?
Besides the basics, there are a few top tips that can elevate your experience and ensure your break is as memorable as possible, especially when it comes to the time difference in the Arctic Circle. Something many first-time travellers forget is that the days are much shorter in Europe’s far north, and that the sun can set as early as 13:00. With this in mind, be sure to make the most of the daylight while it’s still there and perhaps consider bringing a small portable torch or headlamp with you on your adventure.
