THE ROMANTIC RHINE & MEANDERING MOSELLE

Spend a wonderful week on the romantic Rhine and meandering Moselle, drifting lazily past a patchwork of sweeping, vine-clad banks, dotted with pretty timbered villages and medieval castles.

Board your A-ROSA ship in Cologne and sail south overnight for a wonderful morning at pretty Koblenz and then on to Mainz, passing through the Rhine Gorge and beneath the legendary Lorelei. You’ll moor up at Mainz for the night and step ashore the next morning, before sailing back up the Rhine in the early afternoon to the famous wine town Rüdesheim, where you’ll spend the night.

Enjoy a blissful day on the water as you join the Moselle at Koblenz, then moor overnight at the quintessential medieval twin towns of Bernkastel–Kues. You’ll have the entire following day to explore the towns, which are located on opposite sides of the Moselle amid picturesque vineyards. Early next morning, you’ll tie up at Mehring, for the UNESCO-protected Roman city of Trier, established by Emperor Augustus, before a final call the following day at picture-perfect Cochem, with its fantastic medieval castle looming over the pastel-coloured waterfront buildings, completes a wonderful cruise.

Your Itinerary

View a full breakdown of your holiday to help you plan your trip

  • Travel to Cologne, where you’ll board your sleek A-ROSA vessel at the quayside. Depending on the time of your flight, you’ll have time to explore the city of Cologne under your own steam, with its 2,000-plus years of fascinating history, famous twin-spired Gothic cathedral and lovingly restored Altstadt (old town), before your ship departs in the late afternoon. When the time comes, board your ship, dine when you wish at the gourmet buffet, maybe enjoying a nightcap before turning in.

  • You’ll tie up in Koblenz early in the morning, which sits spectacularly at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle. A strategic stronghold for over 2,000 years, Koblenz is dominated by the imposing mass of the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the far bank. Step ashore, where you’ll have the choice of several exciting optional excursions, or simply stroll along the riverside promenade to Deutsches Eck, where the rivers converge, or take a seat in a café or weinstube, a small traditional German wine bar.

Return to the boat and depart for Mainz at 1pm. Enjoy a stunning afternoon’s cruising, as you pass through the Rhine Gorge and beneath the mighty Lorelei, past idyllic towns and villages flanked by ripening vineyards. You’ll tie up in Mainz around 10pm.

  • Enjoy a morning exploring the picturesque Rhineland city of Mainz. Famous for being the birthplace of the printing press, where Johannes Gutenberg printed the first books in the early 1450s, Mainz was also originally a fort on the Roman Empire's northern border. You'll have the chance to discover its rich history and culture on an included walking tour, and to explore the city, before your ship sails on to Rüdesheim at lunch time, where she’ll tie up for the night.

Rüdesheim is the Rhine’s most celebrated wine town, and you’ll have a blissful afternoon exploring the narrow streets, the most celebrated of which is the Drosselgasse, lined with bars and weinstuben. Enjoy an included ride on the scenic Winzerexpress train.

  • Depart Rüdesheim early in the morning and enjoy a blissful day on the water, as you pass back through the Rhine Gorge and join the Moselle at Koblenz. Spend the day relaxing, taking in the majestic scenery from the deck as you softly glide around the Moselle’s sweeping bends, or perhaps make the most of the on-board facilities. You’ll tie up at the twin towns of Bernkastel–Kues in the evening.

  • Wake up to the wonderful sight of the idyllic twin towns of Bernkastel–Kues, perched on opposing banks of the Moselle. Both towns are characterised by medieval half-timbered buildings and winding, narrow alleyways lined with cafés and restaurants, and are surrounded by picturesque vineyards. Your boat will moor here for the whole day, giving you the chance to find out more about your surroundings on an optional walking tour. Alternatively, you may wish to explore under your own steam.

Re-board your ship, dine when you wish at the gourmet buffet, perhaps enjoying a nightcap, before the ship sails onto Trier late at night.

  • In the morning you’ll arrive at Mehring, near the border with Luxembourg, for Trier. Board the coach for the short journey from the boat’s berth in Mehring to the UNESCO-protected city of Trier, which was founded by Emperor Augustus and birthplace of Karl Max. The city is famous for its collection of well-preserved Roman sites. In fact, eight of Germany’s 39 protected UNESCO sites are found in Trier, including an amphitheatre, Emperor Constantine’s throne room and Germany’s oldest bridge. These sites are thrilling bought to life by an optional tour.

Return to your boat for an early evening departure.

  • This morning you’ll arrive in Cochem, a picture-perfect town with an imposing medieval castle. Your boat will moor at the town for the morning, giving you time to explore its charming narrow streets, lined with timber-framed buildings, and the pastel-coloured waterfront restaurants and cafés. Join the included guided tour of the town and its impressive castle to really get an insight into the town’s history – the perfect way to round off a fascinating week.

Return to your ship in time for an early evening sailing back to Cologne,

  • Today you’ll wake up in the city of Cologne. Bid a fond farewell to your ship and her crew at the end of a marvellous cruise, as you begin your journey home.

Further Information

  • New rules apply when travelling to European Union countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. Note that these new rules do NOT apply when travelling within the United Kingdom or to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland. You do require government issued ID when travelling by air though.

    Passport

British passport holders need to have at least six months validity left on their passport and it needs to be less than ten years old; passports which have a longer validity than ten years are not valid for travel once the tenth anniversary of issue has passed. These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland where you can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.

    Visa

If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania; if you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total. Travel to Ireland will not change and stays there will not count towards the 90-day total.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)

Towards the end of 2022, it is likely that non EU citizens will be required to apply online for an authorisation to visit most European countries. The current details suggest there will be a charge of €7 per person and the authorisation will be valid for all trips made to the EU in a three year period from issue. We will advise you of confirmed details prior to your tour’s departure.

    Border Control

At border control, you may need to show proof of your return journey - your travel documentation issued by us will be sufficient for this. You will also need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens if manual checks are required.

    Healthcare Cover

You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad which covers pre-existing conditions. You should understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and be happy with its cover for healthcare and travel disruption. Newmarket sell a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Ask our travel consultants for more information.

You should also apply for a UK Global Heath Insurance Card (GHIC) which lets you get urgent state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. Note GHIC is only valid in EU countries and not in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

    Mobile Roaming

Roaming charges have been re-introduced by some UK providers when visiting the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Prior to travel, please do check with your phone operator for the most up to date information.
