Your Itinerary

  • Fly to Izmir, on the northern edge of the region known to the Ancient Greeks and Romans as Ionia, meet your tour manager and transfer south to Kusadasi and your comfortable hotel. Depending on the time you arrive you may have the chance to acquaint yourself with your surroundings and relax before enjoying your first dinner at the hotel. Afterwards, head to the bar, back to your suite or perhaps take a stroll into town for a nightcap.

  • Today you're free to enjoy the comforts of the hotel and discover Kusadasi. One of the southern Aegean’s most popular resorts, Kusadasi boasts a fascinating old quarter and Ottoman bazaar, a bustling fish market, a seafront promenade, colourful marinas and a castle-capped island connected to the town by a narrow causeway. It's best seen and experienced away from the fierce heat and teeming crowds of high summer, and offers the perfect location from which to explore the fascinating landscape beyond the coast. Kusadasi is a delight to wander during the day, and offers plenty of entertainment until late into the evening for night owls.

  • Today’s first included excursion sees you board the coach for a short journey to the ruined city of Ephesus, one of the most important Roman, then Byzantine, cities in the Eastern Mediterranean, and witness to the preaching of St Paul in the First Century AD. The ruins are considered (after those at Pompeii) the finest in the Mediterranean, and include churches, bathhouses, fountains, temples and gymnasia, the great Roman Amphitheatre, the facade of the Library of Celsus and the colonnade of the Arcadian Way. It's easy to imagine the past glories of this city that was once invaded by Croesus of Lydia and, later, by Alexander the Great.

You’ll return to Kusadasi later this afternoon, after a fascinating journey into the ancient past.

  • Spend another day enjoying the facilities at your hotel and exploring the town. Why not take a stroll along the harbour promenade, wander around the medieval Kale district, or visit tiny Pigeon Island, which is connected to the town by a narrow walkway?

  • On our second included excursion you’ll visit the geological wonder of Pamukkale (Turkish for Cotton Castle). The hot springs here carry white calcium carbonate deposits down a gentle slope, creating a 100m-high slow-moving, ever-changing cascade with hundreds of terraces, pools and little channels of gleaming white travertine that give the site its name.

The spring emerges on the site of Hierapolis, an ancient spa once frequented by Roman Emperors. The ruins of this once-great city are still visible, ranged around the Thermal Baths, and you’ll be able to visit its Temple of Apollo and restored Roman theatre.

En route to Pamukkale you’ll stop at the “red water” springs of Karahayit, which are famed for their curative powers, and on your way back to Kusadasi there’ll be a chance to soak in the waters and enjoy an included lunch at the luxurious Pam Thermal Hotel, a five-star establishment with a spa fed by 35°C water from a natural spring below.

You’ll return to Kusadasi in the early evening.

  • Enjoy another day of rest and relaxation in Kusadasi and its surroundings. On especially fine days, the nearby beaches, such as Ladies, Paradise and the slightly more distant Tusan, are easily reached by taxi or dolmus (a shared minibus taxi typical in Turkey) and offer a delightful contrast to the bustle of the resort. If the water is calm, why not take a boat trip from the harbour to explore some of the remoter stretches of the coastline?

  • Our final included excursion takes you inland to the remarkably preserved, Greek-built hill village of Sirince. Take a stroll through the idyllic streets, past pretty houses surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and orchards, and perhaps browse the village shops looking for gifts from their ranges of handicrafts and locally produced wines.

Your day continues with lunch and time to explore at Camlik Steam Locomotive Museum. This open-air museum boasts a fascinating collection of historic engines from around Europe and even the USA.

You’ll return to Kusadasi and your hotel to enjoy a last evening and dinner, during which you'll, no doubt, spend some time reliving the memories of the past fascinating few days.

  • Bid farewell to your hosts and return to Izmir to board your flight home at the end of a blissful week by the blue Aegean Sea.

  • The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour.

  • British Citizens require a visa for entry into Turkey. We recommend obtaining an e-Visa online prior to travel to avoid queues upon arrival in Turkey. The cost is 20 US dollars. Please visit www.evisa.gov.tr for more details. Alternatively a visa can currently be obtained upon arrival for a fee of £20, but we do not recommend this route as queue times can be very lengthy and may affect your onward journey. Please also check if this facility is still available before you travel as it may be withdrawn at anytime. For full details please visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey/entry-requirements.

  • We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

  • If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

  • The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

  • Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

  • An Airport Development Fee has been introduced at a few UK Airports. You will be required to pay this charge at the following airports prior to checking in for your flight: Blackpool, Durham Tees Valley, Newquay and Norwich. The amount varies from airport to airport, but it is generally between £5 and £10 per person. Please visit the airport's website for further information.
