Fascinating fact: Siena was originally divided into three areas, called Terzi, or Thirds. The first one, called Terzo di Citta, was the earliest inhabited area of the city, and in its Piazza Postierla you'll find what's said to be the smallest window in the world.

You say: "As a holiday, it's been absolutely fantastic. There are so many highlights."

Your Tour Base: Hotels in Lake Garda, Tuscany and Verona

This escorted holiday to Italy sees us based in a series of three comfortable hotels.

Moniga del Garda

On the south-western shore of Lake Garda, Moniga del Garda is a small town with a pretty harbour area and wide pebble beaches. It is famous for its local rose wine, Chiaretto, and offers a selection of bars, restaurants and cafes.

Chianciano Terme

The spa-resort of Chianciano Terme, 60 miles from Florence, boasts a wonderful climate. It comprises two settlements: the old hill-town and the modern spa town below it, and offers some excellent shops as well as many small gelaterie, bars, cafes and restaurants.

This small village, just a few miles to the west of Verona, is ideally situated for a relaxing final day and transfer to the airport.

Seven Cities of Italy Tour Itinerary

Day One: Fly to Italy

Fly to Italy and transfer to your hotel, situated just a short distance from Lake Garda's shoreline in Moniga del Garda.

Day Two: Included Verona tour

Today's tour takes you to Verona, on the banks of the River Adige. Highlights include Italy's best preserved Roman amphitheatre, famed for its Opera Festival, the sweeping Piazza Bra, crowded with folk watching the world go by from a seat in one of the numerous pavement cafes, and the maze of 13th-century streets that formed the backdrop to Shakespeare's tragic tale of "Juliet and her Romeo".

Day Three: Included Venice tour

Today we'll visit one of the world's most famous and most beautiful cities: Venice. Join our guided tour to see spectacular St Mark's Square and Cathedral, the clock tower, the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge, and discover the many stories of the Palace of Prisons and the Bridge of Sighs, then wander the mysterious labyrinth of narrow alleys and waterways at your own pace.

Day Four: Included Florence tour

Leaving Garda's shores behind, today, you'll travel south, to Florence. There, you'll see the magnificent Florentine skyline, explore Santa Croce and cross the medieval Ponte Vecchio. Art lovers can visit the Accademia to see Michelangelo's peerless statue of David, or wander the Uffizi and admire Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus' (gallery entries payable locally).

In the late afternoon, you'll head further into Tuscany to the tour's second base, Chianciano Terme.

Day Five: Included Siena and San Gimignano excursion

Siena, our destination today, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most perfectly preserved medieval cities in Europe. Its centrepiece is the shell-shaped Piazza il Campo where the traditional Palio horse race is held each year. From here, we head northwest to discover the ancient towers and medieval architecture of the hill-top fortress of San Gimignano.

Day Six: Included Rome tour

Travel south, to Rome, and take a guided tour around the ancient Colosseum and Forum, the great basilicas and the Baroque fountains. We'll stop in the Vatican City to marvel at the great dome of St Peter's, and visit the Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo's unmistakable and priceless ceiling.

Day Seven: Included Assisi excursion

Today we'll travel through Umbria, to Assisi, birthplace of Italy's patron Saint and home to Umbria's greatest glory - the magnificent Basilica Papale di San Francesco d'Assisi. After time to see the beautiful frescoes by Giotto, Cavallini and Martini in the basilica's upper and lower churches, we'll head to Lugagnano, just outside Verona, and settle in to the final hotel of your tour.

Day Eight: Fly back to the UK

Transfer back to the airport and check in for your flight home at the end of an unforgettable tour of Italy.

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time to your hotel is approximately one hour from Verona, and three hours from Milan and Venice. The transfer time back to the airport from your hotel is approximately 10 minutes from Verona Airport and three hours from Milan.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Meals in Italy

Guests on half-board arrangements will be served a three-course evening meal, and can expect a first course of traditional pasta or soup, a main meat or fish course accompanied by one or two types of vegetable, and a simple dessert of fruit, cake or Italian ice cream. Breakfasts will usually consist of bread rolls, jam, cereal, ham, cheese, fruit juice, tea and coffee. Menus will vary from hotel to hotel, but choice will be more limited than in a normal restaurant.

Early mornings

The extensive programme of your holiday will often involve early starts on most days. This will give you as much time as possible in the cities you visit and ensure you return to you hotel in time for dinner each day.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Entrance fees

Since some attractions visited offer free admission to visitors at certain times of year, we do not include entrance fees. These will be payable locally where applicable. This applies to excursions that are included in the price of your holiday and to excursions booked as optional extras.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Changes to your hotel

This holiday is very popular, and we have limited rooms in the hotels described. If demand is high on a particular date we may accommodate you in an alternative hotel, of a similar standard, in a convenient location for the tour. Full details of your hotel will be sent with your Joining Instructions.

Italian hotel room tax

Some regions of Italy have introduced a room tax of between 1 EURO and 3 EURO per person per night, payable directly by the guest to the hotel on check-out. You will be advised by your tour manager in resort if a particular hotel is implementing this charge.

Airport development fees

An Airport Development Fee has been introduced at a few UK Airports. You will be required to pay this charge at the following airports prior to checking in for your flight: Blackpool, Durham Tees Valley, Newquay and Norwich. The amount varies from airport to airport, but it is generally between £5 and £10 per person. Please visit the airport's website for further information.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

*Low deposit of £75 per person applies to new bookings made between 7th February and 31st March 2017 (inclusive) only. This offer only applies to selected air-inclusive holidays. This offer is subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time.

This holiday was excellent in most respects, in particular we had a brilliant tour manager David Kirk Traylor who made the holiday with his personality and depth of knowledge.

Although the itinery was good for us, some people found it over exerting and challenging due to the walking involved and inappropriate footwear. Also very little time to ourselves except in evening when tired; maybe a half day of free time would have been good.

The second hotel ( Hotel President ) was rather tired, although the food was excellent.

Very good value for money, knowledgeable and organised tour guide. However our flight to Italy delayed by 3 hours, which meant that after a very early start from home we were too tired to explore the lake before we started on our excursions next day. The excursion to Florence would have benefited from us having radios for the tour, as due to local noise we could not hear hear the guide. I would have been willing to pay for this service.

David Kirk Traylor absolutely brilliant - funny, informative, engaging, kind and helpful, he even escorted us to bag check-in and had to deal with a dreadful incident with an ill passenger at the very last moment when she had a diarrohea attack on getting off the coach to go into Verona Airport. It was all over the floor and all over her legs and clothes! I don't know how he managed to deal with it without throwing up. He deserves a massive pay bonus for that!Paulo the driver wonderful and even went the extra mile literally, squeezing the very new coach into a really narrow gap between the airport hotel door and a railing so we wouldn't get wet when disembarking during torrential rain. he didn't have to do that. First hotel at Moniga del Garda not good at all. Terrible food.

A good holiday. Very busy and a bit too much in coach. Hotels could be a bit better, but service good. Well managed. Enjoyable.

Excellent snapshot of Italy and an incentive to spend more time there on future trips.
The tour manager and driver were very efficient and the guides all worked well to show us the cities and points of interest.
Value for money even though the dinners at the Riva del Sole hotel were basic. The President Hotel at Chianiano Terme provided a better choice and quality.
I look forward to another trip to Italy in the future and recommend Newmarket Holidays to take care of it.
