Your Itinerary

Depending on your time of arrival, spend the afternoon at leisure, maybe choosing to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings. This evening you’ll enjoy an included dinner at a local restaurant, around 10 minutes’ walk from your hotel, as you look forward to a fascinating few days ahead.

  • Join your friendly tour manager after breakfast for an insightful full-day tour of Kiev, one of Europe’s most captivating capitals. This morning, you’ll visit the iconic St Sophia’s Cathedral, one of Kiev’s outstanding landmarks and the city’s oldest standing church, dating back to the 11th century. Continue with a tour of Kiev’s elegant subway, with its grand, marble-floored walkways adorned by interesting works of art and lit by chandeliers.

Enjoy lunch by your own arrangement, before resuming the tour, starting at the Motherland Monument, which commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union in World War II and dominates Kiev’s skyline, at 335ft tall. The tour’s final stop is the UNESCO-declared Monastery of the Kiev Caves, a gold-domed historic Orthodox Christian complex famed for its unique underground caves and burial sites. Your tour will end in the early evening, giving you the rest of the day to spend at leisure.

  • Today is undoubtedly the highlight of the tour. After breakfast, depart the hotel with your friendly tour manager, who will explain the history of the Chernobyl disaster as you pass through the Dytiatky checkpoint and into the 19-mile Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Local authorities declared the site safe to visit in 2010. All persons entering and leaving the exclusion zone will be subject to a compulsory radiation check. As part of the tour, you’ll be given a mini Geiger counter for the day, so you can detect the mini spikes in radiation.

Call first at the abandoned villages of Cherevach and Zalissya, before continuing to the town of Chernobyl and the semi-buried village of Kopachi. From here, you can see the sarcophagus covering the ill-fated reactor four from just under 900ft. Pass through the Leliv checkpoint and continue to Pripyat, founded in 1970 to house workers of the Chernobyl power plant. Stop at the famous road sign for a photo opportunity, before enjoying a fascinating sightseeing tour of this ghost city. Lunch is served at the Chernobyl Canteen 19, which uses ingredients bought in from the outside. Exit the exclusion zone at Dytiatky, bringing a fascinating day to an end.

Once back in Kiev, the evening is yours to spend as you please, no doubt reflecting on a truly special once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Today, you’ll have the choice of continuing your exploration of Kiev under your own steam or joining the optional excursion to the Pirogovo Open-Air Museum of Folk and Architecture. Founded in 1969, this open-air picturesque museum is made up of an impressive collection of over 300 traditional wooden buildings spread throughout a forested area, each telling its own story through a series of interesting exhibitions. The museum is home to more than 40,000 interesting Ukrainian artefacts, from traditional costumes and woodwork, to embroidery and paintings.

Whatever you decide on, you’re sure to enjoy your final full day in this enthralling country.

  • Transfer back to the airport for your return flight to the UK, after a fascinating few days in Ukraine.
