Your Itinerary

  • Fly to Ljubljana, Zagreb or Venice, and transfer to your hotel in the heart of Ljubljana. Settle in, and perhaps head out to discover the city. Ljubljana is filled with festive magic and romance, its streets clad in glittering light and decorations, at this time of year. Wander the riverside walkways, cross elegant bridges and discover the city's enchanting Baroque Old Town. You'll find a vast choice of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from, and our friendly tour manager will be on hand to point you in the right direction.

  • Join your tour manager for a walking tour of Ljubljana and its wonderful Christmas markets, this morning. A compact walkabout university city, Ljubljana is a delightful place to wander that was named Green Capital of Europe in 2016. The city centre straddles the River Ljubljanicat – its old town watched over by a majestic medieval castle – and there are fantastic panoramic views across to the Julian Alps from the castle observation tower. Each year, Christmas markets appear in four separate locations across the city – both riverbanks, the central market and the courtyard of the city’s castle – offering a mix of handicrafts, Christmas gifts, and food and drink to enchanted visitors and locals alike.

  • Today you'll journey east by coach, through the Slovenian countryside into north-western Croatia, to the cultured, historic Croatian capital, Zagreb. Begin your day here in Ban Jelacic Square where the iconic equestrian statue of Count Josip Jelacic and an elegant sunken fountain contrast with the bustle of the tram stops on one side and the cafes on the other.

Stop for a drink or snack in the covered pavilion that is the heart of the city's Advent celebrations, then head out to wander the stalls of the surrounding Christmas market and explore the rest of the city. Don't miss the short funicular ride to the ancient upper town, Gradec, or the live nativity scene that springs up in front of the city's Neo Gothic cathedral. In the surrounding parks the paths are strung with lanterns, and you'll find stalls are filled with artists’ wares and wintertime treats like strukle – a warm, sweet pastry. The sight of the skaters on Tomislav Square’s vast ice rink; the nosy, fun-filled combination of great food and live music on offer at the Fooling Around market; and the traditional market in Zrinjevac Park, all contribute to a wonderful day.

  • Bid farewell to your Slovenian hosts, and transfer back to airport to board your flight home.
