Your Itinerary

View a full breakdown of your holiday to help you plan your trip

  • Arrive in Lisbon airport, meet your tour manager and transfer to your first hotel. Settle in, rest and relax, and spend your first Portuguese evening as you wish.

  • Join your tour manager for a guided excursion that will bring to life the Portuguese capital and its elegant neighbours. Discover Lisbon, the historic maritime city set on the bank of the River Tagus. See the ornate grandeur of the Belém quarter, or the Baixa’s tree-lined avenues. Perhaps hitch a ride on an historic tram, or sip a coffee in a pavement café.

Your next stop will be Estoril, where the promenade and casino, palm-fringed lawns and dazzling flowerbeds still radiate an air of gentility and old-fashioned charm. From there it's back to chic Cascais, a Portuguese Royal retreat that has lost none of its allure despite the end of monarchy and its increasing popularity.

  • Enjoy a day of rest and relaxation in your hotel and its surroundings. The energetic might take a stroll along the promenade towards Estoril, while others head for the beach or Cascais' charming Old Town. You'll have the chance to explore more of Lisbon, or nearby, UNESCO-listed Sintra National Park, with its Moorish Royal Palace and ornate, colourful Pena Palace.

  • Early today we'll return to Lisbon Airport to catch the two-and-a-half-hour flight to the Green Island - largest and easternmost of the Azores. Once here you'll have a short transfer into the heart of Azorean capital, Ponta Delgada, and your hotel for the next five nights.

An elegant, cosmopolitan city, Ponta Delgada boasts grand buildings, marbled squares, several ornate churches and a sweeping promenade overlooking its busy port and the ocean beyond. Enjoy an included dinner at your hotel this evening.

  • The first of your island excursions takes you, first, to the Santa Iria viewpoint. Take in the panorama of the northern coast, before calling at Europe’s only working tea plantation and factory, at Gorreana. Another spectacular view reveals the Furnas Valley and its beautiful lake, at the edge of which the village of Furnas and the Terra Nostra botanical gardens wait to welcome you. Enjoy a traditional lunch of Cozido das Furnas, a meaty stew prepared in underground ovens, and enjoy the beautiful gardens. Complete a wonderful day with a dip in a thermal pool before returning to Ponta Delgada.

  • Explore Ponta Delgada under your own steam, today, and discover a city that combines centuries-old traditions with the comforts of a modern metropolis. Several beautiful churches draw the eye, while the historic city centre is a treasure chest of elegant 17th- and 18th-century architecture and richly decorated merchants’ houses. Why not pause for lunch in one of the many restaurants, pass a pleasant hour or two in a café or bar, or take a stroll along the quayside?

You'll also be able to join our optional whale-watching excursion for a chance to see some of the world’s largest mammals in their natural habitat.

  • Join your tour manager for a half-day visit to São Miguel's most striking natural phenomenon – the legendary Sete Cidades (Seven Cities) Lagoons, two lakes of differing blue-green hues formed by a dramatic volcanic caldera. Take in the sight from the King’s Viewpoint above, then descend to the lake shores and end a wonderful few hours with a visit to Europe’s only pineapple plantation.

Back at the hotel, a second included dinner will be served this evening.

  • Spend a last day enjoying the amenities of the hotel or exploring Ponta Delgada once again.

  • Make the short transfer back to the airport to begin your journey home. Arriving back in Lisbon, you'll have time to enjoy two final holiday highlights, as you pay a visit to a wine cellar and then enjoy a last lunch, in the chic beach resort of Sesimbra, with its stretch of golden sand and fishing harbour.

Return to the airport via the 17km-long Vasco da Gama Bridge - Europe’s second-longest - to catch your flight home at the end of a marvellous Portuguese holiday.

Further Information

  • The transfer time to your hotel in Cascais will be approximately one hour and the transfer time in Sao Miguel will be approximately fifteen minutes.

  • We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

  • If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

  • The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

  • Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

  • Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

  • Visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice to find out the latest Foreign And Commonwealth Office travel advice for your holiday destination, as well as information about passports and visas.

  • Please note: The flight from Lisbon to Sao Miguel will depart midday and the return flight to Lisbon will land mid morning.

  • From 1 January 2021, new rules apply on travel within Europe.

Note that these new rules do NOT apply when travelling within the United Kingdom or to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland. You do require government issued ID when travelling by air.

New rules apply when travelling to European Union countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure:

    Passport
British passport holders need to have at least six months left on their passport and it needs to be less than ten years old.
These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland where you can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.
    Visa
If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania; if you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total. Travel to Ireland will not change and stays there will not count towards the 90-day total.
    Border Control
At border control, you may need to show proof of your return journey - your travel documentation issued by us will be sufficient for this. You may also need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing.
    Healthcare Cover
You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad. Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will no longer be valid. It’s particularly important you have travel insurance with the right cover if you have a pre-existing medical condition. This is because the EHIC scheme covers pre-existing conditions, while many travel insurance policies do not. You should understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and be happy with its cover for healthcare and travel disruption. Newmarket sell a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Ask our travel consultants for more information.
    Mobile Roaming
From 1 January 2021, the guarantee of free mobile phone roaming throughout the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will end.
Check with your phone operator to find out about any roaming charges you might get from 1 January 2021.
