A journey of remembrance
Join Marco Polo on a very special cruise commemorating the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Occupied Europe that led to the end of the Second World War. See some of the sites associated with this massive and ambitious military operation, and pay homage to the thousands of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on the beaches of Normandy and the fields of Northern France.
Life on board Marco Polo
There's far more to Marco Polo than we could possibly fit on this page. Click below to find out more about her cabins, restaurants and other excellent facilities.
WHAT DOES THE PRICE INCLUDE?
Day One: Depart Portsmouth
Board Marco Polo in Portsmouth ahead of your late-afternoon cruise departure. This historic maritime city was the nerve centre of Operation Overlord and the departure point for tens of thousands of Allied troops early in the morning of 6th June 1944.
Days Two and Three: Antwerp
This afternoon we’ll arrive in the Belgian port of Antwerp. Shore excursions here may include visits to the WWI battlefields of the Somme and Ypres Salient and the fascinating In Flanders Fields and Historial de la Grande Guerre museums. Alternatively, you may be able to visit the Dunkirk beaches and the rocket emplacements from which the terrifying Doodle-bugs were launched.
Marco Polo will spend the night in Antwerp, giving you the chance to discover its cobbled streets and squares, and elegant architecture, and visit the museums and galleries of this city of diamonds and Rubens.
Day Four: Honfleur
Around lunchtime, today, Marco Polo will arrive in Honfleur at the mouth of the River Seine, a short distance from where the invasion’s first shots were fired at Pegasus Bridge. Wander the streets behind the pretty harbour, or perhaps join an optional excursion to Monet's delightful house and gardens at Giverny.
Day Five: Normandy and the Seine
Early this morning, Marco Polo joins the fleet of craft sailing off the Normandy Beaches, commemorating the events of 75 years ago, which changed the course of the Second World War. A ceremony and wreath-laying will take place on board, in memory of those who lost their lives on D-Day and in its aftermath, after which Marco Polo will return to the Seine and head upriver to Rouen.
Day Six: Rouen
Spend today exploring the ancient city of Rouen. See the Place du Vieux-Marche, site of Saint Joan's martyrdom, the famous one-handed mechanical clock and the stunning Gothic cathedral.
Day Seven: Arrive Portsmouth
Bid farewell to Marco Polo and all your fellow travellers, today, as you disembark at the end of your cruise. Before you head home, you many like to complete your D-Day commemoration with a visit the newly refurbished D-Day Museum, which houses an impressive 82-metre-long embroidery of images and events from Operation Overlord.
Days marked above with an anchor include ports where you will be transferred to shore by landing boat. These ports may be inaccessible for customers with mobility difficulties as a result. Any days not listed will be spent at sea.
British Citizens will need a full, 10-year passport to travel on this cruise. Since some countries require visitors to be valid for at least six months after the return date of the cruise we recommend that all customers ensure that this is the case. Holders of non-British passports should check with the relevant embassies to see if any requirements and restrictions exist for any countries visited during the cruise.
