Your Itinerary

  • Board Marco Polo in Portsmouth ahead of your late-afternoon cruise departure. This historic maritime city was the nerve centre of Operation Overlord and the departure point for tens of thousands of Allied troops early in the morning of 6th June 1944.
  • This afternoon we’ll arrive in the Belgian port of Antwerp. Shore excursions here may include visits to the WWI battlefields of the Somme and Ypres Salient and the fascinating In Flanders Fields and Historial de la Grande Guerre museums. Alternatively, you may be able to visit the Dunkirk beaches and the rocket emplacements from which the terrifying Doodle-bugs were launched.

Marco Polo will spend the night in Antwerp, giving you the chance to discover its cobbled streets and squares, and elegant architecture, and visit the museums and galleries of this city of diamonds and Rubens.

  • Around lunchtime, today, Marco Polo will arrive in Honfleur at the mouth of the River Seine, a short distance from where the invasion’s first shots were fired at Pegasus Bridge. Wander the streets behind the pretty harbour, or perhaps join an optional excursion to Monet's delightful house and gardens at Giverny.

  • Early this morning, Marco Polo joins the fleet of craft sailing off the Normandy Beaches, commemorating the events of 75 years ago, which changed the course of the Second World War. A ceremony and wreath-laying will take place on board, in memory of those who lost their lives on D-Day and in its aftermath, after which Marco Polo will return to the Seine and head upriver to Rouen.

  • Spend today exploring the ancient city of Rouen. See the Place du Vieux-Marche, site of Saint Joan's martyrdom, the famous one-handed mechanical clock and the stunning Gothic cathedral.

  • Bid farewell to Marco Polo and all your fellow travellers, today, as you disembark at the end of your cruise. Before you head home, you many like to complete your D-Day commemoration with a visit the newly refurbished D-Day Museum, which houses an impressive 82-metre-long embroidery of images and events from Operation Overlord.

Days marked above with an anchor include ports where you will be transferred to shore by landing boat. These ports may be inaccessible for customers with mobility difficulties as a result. Any days not listed will be spent at sea.
