Your Cruise Ship: Columbus

Following a multi-million pound refit in 2015, Columbus has become the latest addition to the CMV ocean fleet. This much-loved cruise ship has been serving the British market since 1989, when she was christened by Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn. Now sailing from her home port of London Tilbury, she offers a number of thrilling voyages close to home, throughout Europe and across the world.

As her name suggests, Columbus is a true explorer of the seas. Choose from a range of cruises to destinations in Europe, or travel across the world on a four-month Grand Round The World Cruise – which you have the opportunity to join for the entire cruise, or at a number of far-flung ports en route for specific sectors of the journey.

Staying true to the CMV brand, Columbus cruises are normally entirely child-free. There are, however, two designated summertime sailings that will operate as ‘all-age cruises’ for all the family to join. When on board, the wide range of dining options, bars and leisure facilities, as well as the services of CMV’s friendly and attentive crew, ensure that you'll enjoy a relaxed, unforgettable holiday.

Columbus by day

At each port of call, you’ll have the opportunity to step ashore and explore, either under your own steam or by joining a shore excursion lead by a friendly, knowledgeable tour guide. Full details of tours available on your cruise will be supplied well in advance of departure.

When you’re at sea, well-appointed Columbus offers a wealth of leisure facilities spread across her 13 passenger decks. Her showpieces are the central, three-deck shopping atrium, where you can pick up essentials and souvenirs, and the rooftop Dome Observatory, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding sea and coasts.

On every morning of your cruise you’ll receive a copy of the day’s programme of entertainment and activities. Choose to attend a port lecture, to join a dance or exercise class, or to test your general knowledge at a morning quiz. For those wanting to keep fit there is a fully-equipped gym, and for creative types the Crafters Studio offers the chance to learn new skills.

When you’re looking for some down time, there are plenty of ways to relax on board. Indulge in a spa treatment, enjoy a swim in one of the two heated swimming pools, recline on a sun lounger or settle down with a book in the Lounge & Library. On the top deck you’ll also find a big screen, which shows major sporting events and movies.

Columbus by night

Begin your evening with a pre-dinner drink at one of Columbus’s many lounges and bars.  Perhaps sip a cocktail while listening to soothing piano music at the Captain’s Club, enjoy a pint of ale at British-themed Taverner’s Pub, or savour a crisp wine at Connexions Bar.

Your evening dining options range from formal dining in the main Waterfront restaurant to casual dining at the more relaxed Plantation Bistro. Other options, available at a supplement, include the semi-private Chef’s Table in the Waterfront Restaurant, the Asian-influenced Fusion and the Grill, which specialises in fish and meat. Chefs can tailor dishes for those with special dietary requirements (with prior notification), and there will always be a healthy option on offer for the calorie-conscious.

Following dinner, your evening entertainment begins at the 700-seater Palladium Show Lounge, where the ship’s troupe of musicians, dancers and comedians (plus the occasional celebrity guest) will take to the glittering main stage. Elsewhere, practice your card skills at the Trumps & Aces bridge and card room, try your luck at the casino, or dance beneath the stars at the dazzling Dome Observatory nightclub.
