Lerwick, the Shetland Islands' rugged capital, is gateway to a land of ancient legend, traditional crafts and an incredible abundance of birdlife. Spend time in the town, or join the excursion to the 3000 year-old archaeological site at Jarlshof, full of Bronze and Iron Age remains.
Klaksvik, capital of the Northern Isles, welcomes Marco Polo today. The inhabitants of this remote Danish outpost are direct descendants of the Vikings, and still speak an ancient Norse language. Their remote town is surrounded by natural beauty, and the area is a haven for birdwatchers.
Tiny Torshavn, capital of the remote Faroe Islands, welcomes us today. These islands have a deep-rooted Norse tradition and are home to countless bird species. Today, you might cross the famous 'Bridge across the Atlantic', which connects Streymoy, the main island, with smaller Eysturoy, home to wooden churches and spectacular scenery.
Today's destination is the ancient Orkney capital of Kirkwall, with its magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, meandering streets and excellent museum. Kirkwall is gateway to a rugged hinterland where history, archaeology, crafts and wildlife all play their part.
This morning we'll tie up in the great natural harbour at Invergordon, on Scotland's rugged east coast. Step ashore to explore, or join a shore excursion, perhaps to Inverness in search of Nessie. Golfers may head to the fine course at nearby Dornoch, while whisky connoisseurs can make a pilgrimage to the celebrated Ord Distillery.
Enjoy a final leisurely day at sea.
