India Luxury Rail Tour Itinerary

Day One: Fly to India

Fly overnight from the UK to Delhi.

Day Two: Included New Delhi city tour

This morning you'll arrive in Delhi, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to your first hotel. After an included lunch and time to freshen up, we'll head out to explore the grandeur of New Delhi. See the historic India Gate war memorial, the vast boulevard of the Rajpath, the sacred Gandhi Smriti in which the Mahatma spent his last days, and the National Railway Museum, which celebrates the sub-continent's most revered form of transport (which you'll soon experience for yourself).

Day Three: Included Old Delhi guided tour

This morning, join your Tour Manager for a guided tour of Delhi's Old City on which you'll discover the Jama Masjid Mosque and Raj Ghat, Gandhi's cremation site. You'll also see the Red Fort, and take a rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk.

After a stylish lunch in the historic surroundings of The Maidens Hotel, you'll leave Delhi and journey by comfortable coach to the Pink City of Jaipur.

Day Four: Included Amber tour

Visit Amber, the ancient capital of the Rajput Empire, with its magnificent palaces and temples dominated by the stronghold of Amber Fort. Make the final part of the climb by jeep to marvel at the Royal Halls and the stupendous views from the ramparts, before lunch (payable locally).

This afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Jaipur, introducing the Palace of the Winds, the City Palace and the amazing astronomical observatory built by the city's founder Jai Singh II.

Day Five: Optional elephant scanctuary excursion

Spend today exploring Jaipur, or join our fascinating optional tour to the Elefantastic sanctuary, which cares for these majestic, intelligent creatures and their handlers, and attempts to break the harsh cycle of traditional tourism for both. Make friends with the elephants as you feed, walk and even bathe them.

Later this afternoon, transfer from the hotel to the station to board the Palace on Wheels, one of the world's finest luxury trains. Meet your traditionally attired Khidmatgar attendant, who will show you to your elegant cabin. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the saloon or the main lounge bar, and enjoy your first dinner in the lavishly appointed restaurant car as you head south towards Sawai Madhopur and Ranthambhore National Park.

Day Six: Included Ranthambhore National Park wildlife tour

The first of the many, extraordinary highlights of your journey aboard the Palace on Wheels is today's visit to Ranthambhore National Park, home to the endangered 'tigers of Ranthambhore'. Leaving the train very early in the morning, we'll head into the park for a game drive safari in an open-topped 'canter' accompanied by a knowledgeable naturalist guide.

Re-board the train for breakfast as it continues through southern Rajasthan to historic Chittorgarh. Enjoy lunch on board and, once you've reached Chittorgarh, witness an amazing sound and light show at the monumental fort above the town.

Day Seven: Included Udaipur guided tour

Glorious Udaipur is set against a background of rolling hills beside Lake Pichola. The lake's waters are home to two exquisite marble palaces, both overlooked by the majestic, lakeside City Palace. Explore the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and the Saheliyon-ki-Bari - the beautiful Gardens of the Royal Ladies - on a guided tour of Udaipur, stop for lunch at a splendid heritage hotel, then round off your visit with an unforgettable boat trip across the lake, before re-boarding the train to journey on north-westwards.

Day Eight: Included Jaisalmer tour and camel ride

Today's destination is the golden, desert city of Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan's remote west. Here, beneath the crumbling, yellow sandstone ramparts of Jaisalmer Fort, a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with ornate havelis transports you to another time. Wander the colourful bazaars and, after lunch, journey out into the surrounding dunes to enjoy a camel ride and dinner under the stars.

Day Nine: Included Jodhpur city tour

Jodhpur - called the Blue City for its ancient colour-washed dwellings - is dominated by monumental Meherangarh Fort. A visit to the fort is the highlight of today's stop, and you'll also have time to explore the bustling old city's colourful bazaars and markets.

Re-join the train for an overnight journey east, and a last sumptuous feast on aboard.

Day 10: Included Keoladeo National Park wildlife tour

Keoladeo National Park, at ancient Bharatpur, is a bird-watchers' paradise. Very early this morning you'll have the chance to stop here and search the skies for the 230-plus species that make the park their home.

Afterwards, the Palace on Wheels makes her stately way to Agra, the City of Love and home to the unmistakeable, iconic Taj Mahal. Disembark train at the end of your journey, bidding farewell to your attendant, and head into the city to Agra fort, to explore its royal pavilions, palaces and courtyards, enjoy a relaxing lunch, meet your tour manager and check in to your final hotel.

This afternoon, we'll take our first trip to the Taj Mahal to see it in all its glory at sunset.

Day 11: Included Agra and Taj Mahal tour

Make the most of your final full day in Agra with a visit to the serene Itmad-ud-Daulah mausoleum and the beautiful Mehtab Gardens, returning to the Taj Mahal to relax in the surrounding gardens or joining the throng in Agra's labyrinthine bazaar. This evening, relive the memories of your rail tour of India and enjoy the company of your new-found friends during a special farewell dinner.

Day 12: Fly back to the UK

Early this morning we'll transfer to Delhi airport to check in for your flight home. You'll arrive in the UK later the same evening, at the end of a wonderful Indian railway adventure.
