Itinerary

Day One

Fly to Washington and upon arrival meet your Tour Manager and make the scenic journey into Virginia for a two-night stay in Williamsburg. Rest and relax after the journey, and enjoy your first evening.

Day Two

Step back in time on today's optional full day excursion visiting the popular attraction of Historic Jamestowne, the first permanent English settlement in America. Your visit will allow time to see the Glasshouse and be amazed at the artefacts discovered by the archaeologists at the original Jamestown Fort. Next stop is colonial Williamsburg, where you will be transported back to the pioneering days of the 18th Century as you stroll the living museum of cobbled streets and historic buildings, and hear ' residents' in period costume discuss 'the day's events' in the dialect of the time.

Day Three

Today will be one to savour, as you enjoy our included tour and visit exquisite Charlottesville, the historic home of 'Founding Father' Thomas Jefferson, the third US President, where the spirit of earliest America is lovingly preserved in magnolia-lined streets and some of the country's oldest dwellings. Continue on into Virginia's fabled Blue Ridge Mountains, where breathtaking natural wonders can be explored in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park, a refuge for deer and other wildlife. Continue to Tysons Corner, close to Washington DC for the night.

Day Four

A full-day visit to the enthralling US capital brings the opportunity to join a guided tour of the world's most powerful square mile, including Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and, of course, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, The White House. After the chance to discover the 'little town' on the bank of the Potomac River, you'll journey on towards New York and New Jersey for a two-night stay.

Day Five

Today you'll make the journey east to cross the Hudson River to Manhattan, the pulsating heart of New York - the incomparable 'Big Apple'. Shop at leisure in some of the world's most iconic stores, take in the world-famous sights, visit one of the city's renowned museums, or take a stroll in leafy Central Park. Join our Guided City Tour, on which the likes of Central Park, Fifth Avenue and the Empire State Building will be brought to life. After a mesmerising day, you'll return to New Jersey.

Day Six

A scenic journey leads to the fabled maritime resort town of Newport, Rhode Island, home to the opulent 'summer cottages' of some of America's wealthiest families, built along the rocky shoreline. Take in the atmosphere of this quintessential 'playground of the rich', with its racing yachts and other sleek craft in the famous harbour, before re-boarding the coach for the onward journey through some colourful Fall scenery into Massachusetts and a two-night stay in Hull, south of Boston.

Day Seven

Join our full day's optional tour onto Cape Cod and to Hyannisport, where you will see the JFK Memorial, before heading to Plymouth, where the first settlers landed in the New World. There's time to find lunch and a chance to view Mayflower II, a replica of the early settlers' ship, before visiting Plimoth Plantation, a fascinating living museum where costumed actors and realistic reconstructions depict a day's life in 1627.

Day Eight

Today you'll head into elegant Boston, America's most 'European' city. Join the optional City Tour and discover the city's rich and colourful history, as you take in sights including the gold domed State House overlooking Boston Common, the cobbled streets of Beacon Hill and the places associated with the events leading up to 1776 and Independence from the British. The afternoon is free for you to explore at leisure, perhaps taking in historic Faneuil Hall, and nearby colourful Quincy Market with its bars, restaurants and speciality stalls. Stroll around the harbour, perhaps visiting the city's world class aquarium, pay a visit to the famous 'Tea Party' ship or explore the delightful streets of Midtown. Later, transfer to Boston Airport for the return overnight flight.

Day Nine

Arrive back in the UK, at the end of a marvellous Fall holiday.

Follow the Fall Touring Hotels ★★★

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour.

Passports and visas

When travelling to the USA, British citizens require passports with an integrated chip (shown on the front by a small rectangular symbol beneath the word PASSPORT), valid beyond the return date from the USA. Visas are not normally required for entry, but visitors must apply for an ESTA online with US Immigration at least 72 hours before departure at www.cbp.gov/esta . The current charge is $14 for British Citizens. British subjects and anyone who has a criminal record or has ever been arrested should consult the US Embassy as a visa may be required. Note too that if you have visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011, or have dual nationality with any of these countries, you do require a US visa and cannot travel on the Visa Waiver Program.

Departure dates and fall colours

This tour covers a large distance from Massachusetts to southern Virginia, and so Fall foliage will naturally vary. On early departures, leaves are more likely to have turned in the northern areas covered, whereas on later dates it is the more southern areas that will be most notable, with leaf-fall having already occurred further north.

On your flight

All outbound flights depart and arrive on the same day. All return flights leave in the evening and land in the UK the next day. On-board meals will usually include lunch and a snack on outward flights, and dinner and breakfast on flight home. Soft drinks are complimentary, but some airlines will charge for alcoholic drinks.

Luggage allowance

You are permitted to take one suitcase per person on the aircraft, which should not exceed 23kg.

Helicopter flights

Sightseeing flights by helicopter are weight controlled and balanced. Please contact us if you wish to book a helicopter flight and your bodyweight exceeds 250lb. (In such cases, a seat may have to be left empty, and some companies may charge a premium.)

Tipping

Gratuities are a way of life in North America, and it is generally accepted that they form part of a person's earnings. The customary gratuity for a coach driver or Tour Manager is about $5 per person per day. It is normal to tip 15-20 per cent of the bill for a taxi or in a restaurant, and to leave a dollar or so per drink in a bar.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted on any coach forming part of your holiday, though regular stops will be made for your comfort en route. The majority of hotels in North America are non-smoking throughout, including in all bedrooms. In general smoking outside is acceptable, but do look out for signs prohibiting this close to public entrances or bus stops.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

Hotel rooms

Standard hotel rooms in North America will contain one or two double- or queen-sized beds, and it is not possible to add extra beds to the room. Parties consisting of more than two travellers, but who have only booked one room, will be expected to make use of the two beds provided. If this is a concern, you may wish to consider booking more than one room for your group.

*This offer applies to the tours departing on 28th September, 5th October and 19th October 2017 only, and is valid on bookings made between 19th and 31st July 2017 (inclusive). Prices shown when booking do not include the discount. The discount amount will be added to your booking once the promo code has been entered and will be confirmed before purchase. The offer may not be used in conjunction with any other offer, is subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time.

It worked for me because the group was relatively small and fit. I would have struggled with a full coach of 50 with mobility issues. (it would all have been too slow for me).

We enjoyed the trip. It was a lot to cover in 7 days - I think Marsha said we had done 1,350 miles from pick up in DC to drop off in Boston.

We felt that one or two of the journey breaks were unnecessary and provided us with time to do nothing. It may have been better to miss them out and have more time at the final destination.

Our first coach driver was delightful but had to leave us in NYC due to personal reasons. His replacement wasn't so good in our opinion - less helpful with luggage on and off the coach.

Tour guide, Marsha, was very good and all the local guides were excellent, as were the hotels.

Would recommend, but I don't think you are running this tour next year from your brochure details. I wonder why that is ???

Time in Boston on last day while waiting for flight too long. Varied trip including cities, coast and countryside.

Optional trips especially Williamsburg was good in that it involved walking.

Trip to hotel on first day was too long especially as had three hour delay on flight.

Trip to Washington enjoyable especially as close to the US election.

NB we booked our flights separately though we were on same flight Virgin 021 to Washington as Newmarket had arranged for the rest of the people on the tour. We purchased the 8 day tour only from Newmarket ( left the tour at Boston extended the holiday to visit family in Washington).
The coach could do with drink holders due to the amount of travelling from place to place.
Our tour manger Marsha told us that we travelled a total of 1375 miles I 8 days - phew
