Rome and Sorrento Holiday Itinerary

Day One: Fly from the UK to Italy

Fly to Rome, or Naples, meet your Tour Manager and relax on our coach as you transfer to your hotel.

Day Two: Included Rome guided tour

Join your Tour Manager for a guided tour of Rome's best known sights, this morning. See the ancient Forum and the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, the imposing sculptures of the Trevi Fountain and much much more. Afterwards you're free to explore the museums on the Capitoline Hill, gaze up at the Pantheon from the world-famous Piazza Navona, shop, explore or just enjoy "la dolce vita".

Day Three: Optional Vatican City tour

On today's optional excursion we'll cross the Tiber to Castel St Angelo and the Vatican City, where St Peter's Square is dominated by the majestic dome of the Basilica. Step inside to see Bernini's baldacchino and Michelangelo's Pieta before completing your visit by viewing Michelangelo's unparalleled frescoes and ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.

Day Four: Included day trip to Monte Cassino

Leaving Rome behind, we'll travel through rolling hills to Monte Cassino, which has been the site of one of Italy's most important monasteries for nearly 1500 years. Almost destroyed during one of the last great battles of the Second World War, it was faithfully rebuilt and stands, today, as a working monastery and monument to the 4000-plus soldiers who lost their lives there.

Moving on, we'll head to the Bay of Naples and stop at Pompeii for a guided tour. Buried by ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D.79, the city was rediscovered in the 18th Century and now offers visitors an astonishing glimpse of everyday life in Early Imperial Rome.

From Pompeii we'll head to our final destination, and our second hotel, in Sorrento, in time for dinner.

Day Five: Day at leisure

Spend today relaxing. Window-shop your way along the Corso Italia to the Piazza Tasso, then head down to the seafront to watch the boats in the town's Piccola and Grande marinas.

Day Six: Included journey along the Amalfi Drive

On today's included excursion we'll follow the Amalfi Drive as it winds its way past sheer rock faces and gleaming blue waters. See Positano's cliff-side cluster of houses and hotels, Amalfi's cathedral and main square, and Ravello. Expect a day of astonishing views and unforgettable Italian scenery.

Day Seven: Optional excursion to Capri

Today on our optional excursion, we cross to Capri, the magical Isle of Dreams. Enjoy the spectacular views from Villa San Michele in Anacapri or as you ride the chair lift to the top of Monte Solaro (payable locally), and perhaps take a boat trip to the famous 'Blue Grotto' or wander the streets of chic, cosmopolitan Capri Town.

Day Eight: Fly back to the UK

Board our coach as head back to the airport in time to check in for your flight home.

The transfer time upon arrival is 45 minutes from Rome airport, and three hours and 30 minutes from Naples. On the return the transfer time to Naples is one hour and 15 minutes, and four hours to Rome.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Entrance fees

Since some attractions visited offer free admission to visitors at certain times of year, we do not include entrance fees. These will be payable locally where applicable. This applies to excursions that are included in the price of your holiday and to excursions booked as optional extras.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

Italian hotel room tax

Some regions of Italy have introduced a room tax of between 1 € and 3 € per person per night, payable directly by the guest to the hotel on check-out. You will be advised by your tour manager in resort if a particular hotel is implementing this charge.

Airport development fees

An Airport Development Fee has been introduced at a few UK Airports. You will be required to pay this charge at the following airports prior to checking in for your flight: Blackpool, Durham Tees Valley, Newquay and Norwich. The amount varies from airport to airport, but it is generally between £5 and £10 per person. Please visit the airport's website for further information.

Finchley Family
Everything exceeded our expectations. The included excursions could not be faulted. The only complaint we had was at the Sorrento hotel where the security of our passports and room key was left on an unattended desk at reception!

Folkestone Couple
A well organised holiday. Daniela, our tour manager, was very helpful and knowlegable and kept things on track.
The hotels were comfortable but out of the way from the centres of Rome and Sorentto.
Everything was well organised and stress free.
The only thing that caused a bit of consternation for the group of us who arrived together was the transfer coach driver who picked us up from the airport. Upon arrival in Rome he suddenly stopped the coach and unloaded the luggage without telling us we had arrived and had to be asked to point us in the direction of the hotel as it was not clear where we were to go. That was the only problem.
A good relaxing holiday and value for money.

Sadly lost a day due to the cancelled flight. Food in both hotels left much to be desired. We both enjoyed the rest of the holiday.

The tour guide for our trip - Daniella, was a good ambassador and asset for Newmarket Holidays. She ended up as being everyone's friend with her sense of humour and dedication. No one was left out of her infectious humour and knowledge. Newmarket holidays should take credit for organizing this two centre break which included Sorrento.
The only down side to the holiday was the optional tour of St Peters and the Vatican which was out of the control of Newmarket holidays - in short the whole tour was a crowded out non event with (in my view) very excessive numbers of people being allowed in by the Vatican staff, whereby, despite the efforts of the tour guide, we were trundled along with hoards of other visitors both in front and behind. In particular the Sistine Chapel was verging on an impossibility to absorb the wonderful art work with the chapel being crowded to capacity - like a cattle market, and shuffling along keeping an eye on what was in front and behind you with the odd moment of looking up to the ceiling. Absolute waste of time and money especially when we booked this trip in October in an effort to avoid such crowds. As a side note - it was understood that a good number of this crowd were members of a German delegation who were visiting the Vatican on a state visit with Angela Merkel. All of our party were disgusted with the Vatican organisation to allow such crowds in the building at the same time.

Great Cornard, Sudbury, Suffolk Couple
A good holiday, breakfast in the Romoli in Rome v poor, tinned fruit, poor juice and coffee. 20 minutes to the Metro, not many restaurants near the hotel, staff good, guide fun and efficient a few things we were told at the last minute. Sistine Chapel a terrible crush and v noisy, no atmosphere at all. Sorrento good Hotel some meals unappetising especially on our arrival, still no fresh fruit for breakfast just apples, staff very helpful and both our rooms were clean and comfortable. Excellent visit to Rome, Pompei, Almalfi Coast.
