Wonderful Amsterdam, with its picturesque canals and step-gabled buildings, never fails to delight. Explore the city, and perhaps visit the renowned Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.
Days Three to Five
Spend three days at sea enjoying Columbus's on-board amenities. On Christmas Day (Day Five), enjoy the celebrations in the company of your fellow passengers, being looked after by the Captain, crew and entertainment team.
Spend today in the British outpost of Gibraltar in the shadow of the famous Rock. Explore Main Street, and take a cable car to the heights above to see the famous Barbary Apes, and the views across the Straits to North Africa and the Atlas Mountains.
Spend today relaxing as Columbus heads out into the Atlantic.
Reaching Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, Columbus will call at the island's principal port, Santa Cruz. Here you can experience 'the whole world in one day' - swim in warm waters, throw snowballs on the slopes of Mt Teide, and shop in the capital's glitzy shopping malls. There will also be a range of optional excursions on offer.
Step ashore at Arrecife on Lanzarote. This sun-baked and colourful holiday isle, with its black sand beaches, offers opportunities to head to 'fire mountain' and to take a camel ride to the edge of a volcano.
The great trading port of Las Palmas is gateway to Gran Canaria. Explore modern Puerto de la Luz or head to the the old town Vegueta's palm-fringed squares. An optional excursion inland will take in some superb views.
Wander the wonderful Botanical Gardens or take an exhilarating wickerwork 'toboggan' ride (from Monte to Livramento) as Columbus visits Funchal, capital of sun-blessed, sub-tropical Madeira, today.
Day 12 (New Year's Eve)
Enjoy a restful and relaxing day at sea, then join the celebrations as the crew, staff and your fellow passengers mark the end of 2016 and the start of the New Year.
The Portuguese capital, Lisbon, stands on the River Tagus down which the great adventurers Dias and Da Gama sailed during the Age of Exploration. Today's shore excursion will introduce the city, where the maze of narrow, hilly streets of the Alfamar district seem to have remained unchanged for centuries.
Spend two final days at sea as Columbus returns to the UK.
Disembark, bid farewell to the ship and her crew, and make your way home.
