Discover the hidden treasures of Portugal's first and second cities, visit the city's former capital and academic centre - Coimbra, and explore vineyards and quintas of the Douro Valley on this week-long escorted tour.
Fly into Lisbon, meet your tour manager at the airport and let our coach carry you into the city to your first hotel. Check-in, relax and perhaps head out to explore, before this evening's Welcome Dinner.
From the expanse of the Praca do Comercio, through the Arco da Rua Augusta to the cafes and elegant avenues of the Baxia, and from the intricate Manueline stonework of the Tower of Belem and Jeronimos Monastery to the maze-like tangle of winding alleys, steps and bright buildings of the Alfama, Lisbon is a joy. After our included guided tour introduces the city you'll be free to explore. Take a ride on one of the city's historic tram lines, or watch the world go by on Rossio Square.
Your first stop on today's optional excursion is Estoril. Home to Europe's largest casino, Estoril remains a stylish, genteel resort with charming seafront cafes and a sandy beach. Heading along the coast, we'll visit Cascais before turning inland to discover Sintra.
Once the summer retreat of the Portuguese Royal Family, Sintra's striking palaces - the Palacio da Vila and the Palacio da Pena - cobbled main square and bright, balconied buildings boast stunning views of the surrounding National Park from their hillside perch.
We'll leave Lisbon, today, and travel north to Oporto, on the banks of the River Douro. We'll breeak our journey in the country's medieval capital, Coimbra. Climb up through the streets to the university - established in the 12th Century and still among Europe's most spectacular (and respected) academic institutions - before we continue to Oporto and our second hotel.
Begin to explore Oporto on today's included guided tour. The ancient, time-weathered city clings haphazardly to the hillsides above the River Douro. Stroll onto the top deck of the Ponte Dom Luis I for spectacular views, see the ornate tower of Clerigos Church and visit to one of the famous port lodges for a tasting.
Our final included excursion takes us along the Douro River Valley, through the woods around Amarante and the green hills of Mesao Frio, to the port of Regua, the home of Port wine. Here we'll have the chance to stroll through the vineyards of a working quinta (traditional wine-producing estate) before returning to our hotel to enjoy a Farewell Dinner.
Say goodbye to your hosts after breakfast, this morning, as our coach arrives to carry you back to the airport to catch your flight home.
The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately 30 minutes.
Hotel transfer times
The flights from some departure airports offered on this tour are indirect, and you will be required to change aircraft en route, where there will be a short wait for your next flight. Your luggage will be checked all the way through to your final destination. Full flight details will be shown at the time of booking.
We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.
