Day One

Fly into Iceland's Keflavik Airport, where our Tour Manager will meet you and a coach will be waiting to carry you to Reykjavik and your first hotel.

After check-in you'll have the rest of the day free. Relax or explore as you see fit. Reykjavik is a surprising, colourful city where bright buildings and quiet streets conceal a lively, friendly nightlife, excellent restaurants and an ever-growing range of microbreweries.

Day Two

On today's included Golden Circle tour, you'll see Thingvellir - the green expanse where Iceland's ancient parliament (the Althing) used to meet. Stop beside the (near-extinct) original Geysir and time the gap between the eruptions from the nearby, and far more frequent, Strokkur waterspout, before rounding off your day with a visit to the vast cascade of the Gulfoss waterfall.

Day Three

This morning we'll cross from Landeyjahofn to Vestmannaeyjar on Heimaey in the Vestmann Islands. Nestled in the gentle dip between the twin volcanic cones of Eldfell and Helgafell to the east and the rugged west-coast cliffs, Vestmannaeyjar was almost swallowed in the eruptions of 1973 that are now commemorated at the Eldheimar Museum. Soak up the serene beauty of your surroundings as you spend the night here.

Day Four

We'll return to mainland Iceland, today, and spend the day discovering the glacial wonders of Vatnajokull National Park. Take a boat across the waters of Jokulsarlon, see the vast mountains and icy mass of Skaftafellsjokull glacier towering over the Alpine landscape of Skaftafell and step onto the basalt 'church-floor tiles' of Kirkjugolf - actually a series of basalt columns embedded completely in the ground so that only the tops can be seen.

We'll spend the night in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, on the edge of this remarkable region.

Day Five

The black sands, caves and basalt rock formations of Reynisfjara beach are our first stop, today, but the highlight will be the site of Eyjafjallajokull - the volcanic source of 2010's Icelandic ash cloud - and the chance to see footage of the eruption at the volcano's visitor centre.

We'll return to Reykjavik via Skogar Museum, for the chance to learn about everyday life in Iceland through the ages, and the perfect free-falling torrent of the Seljalandsfoss - easily one of the most beautiful sights of the entire tour.

Day Six

Take a dip in the mineral-laden waters of the Blue Lagoon on our final optional excursion. These warm waters have become one of Iceland's most recognizable attractions, but began life as a by-product of the nearby geothermal power plant where superheated water rising from the ground near a lava flow is used to drive turbines that generate electricity for the region, and heat the local water supply.

Day Seven

Transfer back to Keflavik Airport to board your flight home.
