Full Itinerary

Day One

Make your way to Tilbury and board Magellan for this evening's sailing.

Day Two

The first full day of your cruise is spent on board. Get to know the ship and your fellow passengers, and make the most of the on-board amenities as Magellan steams north east.

Day Three

This morning Magellan docks in "wonderful, wonderful" Copenhagen. Stroll the stylish streets, or enjoy an excursion taking in the famous sights including the famous bronze statuette of the 'Little Mermaid'. Watch the world go by from a harbour-side bar in Nyhavn, and don't miss the sculpted walkways of the world-famous Tivoli Gardens.

Day Four

Magellan arrives in Warnemunde, gateway to the city of Rostock, this morning. The city retains much of its medieval charm, but for many the main attraction of this stop will be our optional excursion to Berlin. Stroll from the arch of the Brandenburg Gate down Unter den Linden to explore the former East German sector; browse the shops on the 'Ku'damm'; and take in the various remnants of 20th Century conflict - from Hitler's Bunker to Checkpoint Charlie.

Day Five

Spend today relaxing as Magellan heads east through the Baltic.

Day Six

Almost impossibly beautiful, the Estonian capital Tallinn, with its enchanting and virtually pristine Old Town, is one of Europe's most scenic cities. Discover this timeless gem, with its winding cobbled streets of storybook houses, spectacular steepled churches, ancient buildings and Toompea Castle.

Days Seven and Eight

Today Magellan docks in magnificent, historic St Petersburg. Discover the incomparable Hermitage Museum, the Haymarket area of the city, still redolent with scenes from Dostoyevsky's novels, and the Marinsky Theatre, home to the world renowned 'Kirov' Ballet. Your two days here will mean you'll also have the opportunity to visit the fabled Summer Palace at Petrodvorets.

Day Nine

Step ashore, today, to explore the wonderful port city of Helsinki, where the City Hall overlooks the fresh fish stalls and historic, covered Market Hall in Market Square. Stroll through Esplanade Park, and take in the panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond from the cathedral tower before we set sail once more.

Day 10

Magellan will call at Nynashamn, this morning, and you'll have the chance to head to Stockholm. Best explored on foot, the Swedish capital spans 14 islets and boasts a wonderful mix of historic sights and fine city parks. Its ancient heart is Gamla Stan, a beguiling labyrinth of cobbled streets, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Days 11-12

Enjoy a final two days at sea, reliving the memories of a wonderful cruise holiday.

Day 13

Magellan arrives back in Tilbury at the end of a wonderful Baltic cruise adventure.

Main disappointment was balance of time on board with time at sea. Would always recommend to friends to seek a Baltic cruise starting in the Baltic with more time in ports.

Lectures were well done - but all about World War II. Why not talks relevant to the trip eg about Russian/Scandinavian history ?

Would have preferred less live entertainment, more films/lectures. What live entertainment we saw was of a pretty high standard though.

Tours were excellent although on two of our six days - second day St Petersburg and Stockholm - the guides were poor (uninformative, unfunny, the Russian lady rather bullying, the Swedish man excessively self-absorbed). Other four were very good indeed.

Food was OK overall - sometimes very good, sometimes not good. Wines were disappointingly expensive and of mediocre quality compared with cocktails/beer.

Generally very enjoyable - especially the crew who were excellent - did not begrudge the gratuity, They deserved it.
The following is not a specific criticism of the line as having looked at other lines policies CMV appear quite reasonable:
Alcohol was in general overpriced, Brits are used to paying what was charged on the ship - so mostly accepted it, however I am fairly certain that no duty is levied in international waters so we were paying 70o\o mark up. There was a"Drinks Package" which mitigated the costs somewhat but I would have had to pay 2x the single person amount because there was a policy that if one person in a cabin had that package then the other was obliged to get it too, and my wife does not drink. So I would be paying for a package that I could not use. At least CMV did not charge corkage for your own wine at dinner(Well done) but how much better to charge less exploitative prices in the first place? I would have drunk theirs in that case
It is possible the excursions were probably reasonably priced but some of them were only really bus rides around an area, and for the price felt like "tourist rip offs." We seldom had enough time at stops - not enough to explore an area. The cost of excursions increased the cost of the holiday by at least 50 o/o (this should be pointed out up-front when booking) - I guess some people were content to stay on the ship but I cannot see the point of going somewhere unless you can walk around a bit and explore.
I would suggest an excursion package where the best trips / visits are included for one (discounted) price (rather like the two day package for St Peters berg) but covering all the ports we stopped at. I am still waiting for my credit card bills to come in - and not relishing it.
To some extent we felt exploited; we were there to have as much money extracted from us as possible - and we were a totally captive market, often there is no option.
On the whole it was enjoyable and were have seen places we will would like to visit again but independently next time.

All good but cruising is probably not the type of holiday I would choose very often as I like to have more time to walk and explore places
