Detailed Itinerary

All days not listed are spent at sea enjoying the excellent facilities aboard Magellan. Ports of call may be subject to change.

Days One & Two

Set sail from fun-loving Sydney - truly one of the world's great cities, with its iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge and famous beaches. It's the start of a wonderful voyage, so settle into your cabin or explore the ship on your first evening on board.

Day Five

Privately owned Hamilton Island is in the paradise of Captain Cook's Whitsundays archipelago (named after the day he arrived in 1770). Here a pretty waterfront awaits, from which boats can be taken to the other islands in the group. Glass lifts in the resort hotels also offer stupendous views.

Day Six

Home to the impressive Museum of Tropical Queensland, bustling former gold town Townsville is a gateway into the lush bush that lies beyond the city. It's also close to beautiful Magnetic Island, where koala bears can often be seen clinging to the eucalyptus trees.

Days Seven & Eight

Two days in sun-baked Cairns bring opportunities to take a glass-bottomed boat to a coral cay - at this stopping-off point for the Great Barrier Reef - or head inland on an excursion to the magnificent tropical rain forest of the Atherton Tablelands.

Day 12

Sail round the Cape York Peninsula, through the Arafura Sea, to a final Australian call - the classic frontier town, Darwin. Take a shore excursion to discover the swamps, mangroves, resident salt-water crocodiles and ancient aboriginal art of Kakadu National Park, before you bid farewell to Australia.

Day 15

Today, a first Indonesian island call offers the possibility of seeing the fearsome Monitor Lizard. The legendary giant 'dragons' are found only here and neighbouring Rinca, so join a National Park ranger to explore. Magellan sails this afternoon, heading towards the next paradise isle.

Day 16-17

Magellan stays a night in Bali's international cruise port at Benoa, a welcoming and colourful place. Head ashore by tender to discover some of the delights of the south of the island, or take an excursion further afield.

Day 18

The former Dutch colonial outpost of Semerang, Java, radiates charm. Step ashore to explore its fascinating old town and colourful Chinese quarter, or join a shore excursion for the opportunity to discover the world's biggest Buddhist shrine, at Borobudur.

Day 19

The former Spice Trade port of Jakarta is now one of South East Asia's most dynamic, ultra-modern cities. Its Dutch colonial past can be seen in the Old Harbour's pinisi schooners, historic warehouses and the 18th-century City Hall. See the golden-tipped National Monument and perhaps the National Museum, a treasure-chest of Chinese and Asian artefacts.

Day 22

A cruise through the South China Sea brings you to oil-rich Brunei, with its preserved rainforests and its capital Bandar Seri Begawan. High points include the stupendous Omar Saifuddien Mosque and the Royal Regalia Building (housing the Sultan's priceless treasures), and no visit here is complete without taking in the delightful water village at Kampong Ayer.

Day 23

Kota Kinabalu is the idyllic principal settlement of the state of Sabah, close to Malaysia's highest peak. Discover its mix of Chinese, Malay, expatriate European and local cultures. Take a shore excursion into the interior to explore before Magellan turns north to head across the South China Sea.

Day 25

Raised from the ruins of WWII, the prosperous capital of the Philippines is a jaw-dropping, cosmopolitan melting pot of cultures. While Old Manila provides an insight to the city's past, and the restored cathedral reflects its status as Asia's largest Christian settlement, reminders of its long-term ties with the west can be seen throughout.

Days 27-28

Two full days in Hong Kong bring lots of opportunities to discover this exciting metropolis. Explore under your own steam, or choose from optional excursions - to view the skyscrapers from Victoria Peak, to visit floating city Aberdeen and colourful Stanley Market, to cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, and to take in the North Shore's spectacular skyline and buzzing Nathan Road.

Day 30

Crossing the Qiongzhou (Hainan) Strait between the Leizou peninsula and Hainan Island, Magellan cruises into bewitching, UNESCO-listed Halong Bay where countless limestone pillars and cone-shaped islands rise out of the water in a spectacular seascape.

An optional shore excursion takes in the labyrinthine 36 Streets, tranquil Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple of the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. Other highlights here include the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the former leader's traditional house, the fascinating Museum of Ethnology and colourful Dong Xuan market.

Day 32

Magellan calls in the tiny port of Chan My - gateway to central Vietnam's stunning beaches and UNESCO-listed treasures. Visit pretty, riverside Hoi An, with its preserved traditional buildings, or ancient, imperial Hue, where royal pavilions and the tombs of emperors hide behind imposing walls.

Days 34-35

Stay overnight at Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) for the chance to enjoy some fascinating excursions. See the war memorial and former Viet Cong base at the remarkable Cu Chi tunnel complex, or discover the Mekong Delta's landscape of rice paddies, orchards and colourful market towns.

Days 37-38

Conclude your South China Sea passage with an overnight stay in Singapore - dynamic island-city and former British outpost. Here remnants of history - in Little India, China Town, the Colonial District and Raffles Hotel - meet glitzy malls. Disembark to experience it all at the end of your amazing adventure.
