Itinerary

Day One

Travelling by comfortable coach, you'll leave the local area today to make your way to your Channel crossing. You'll continue on to your overnight hotel in the Rhine Valley area.

Day Two

Continue south, arriving to a warm welcome at your chosen hotel.

Day Three (Christmas Eve)

Take a guided tour of the exquisite, UNESCO-listed city of Salzburg. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the Altstadt, and soak up the atmosphere of the Christkindlmarkt held in the shadow of the Hohensalzburg castle and in front of the city's ancient cathedral.

With the scents of gingerbread and Gluhwein in the air, and colourful stalls laden with traditional goods, this is the perfect place to spend Christmas Eve, before you return to the hotel to begin your celebrations.

Day Four (Christmas Day)

Today you'll visit the beautiful Salzkammergut lakes region - as pretty a winter wonderland as you could expect to find. Highlights will include idyllic Mondsee, setting for the wedding scene in 'The Sound of Music', and the quaint lakeside towns of St Wolfgang - with its famous White Horse Inn - and St Gilgen, once home to Mozart's mother and sister.

You'll return to the hotel to enjoy a candlelit, four-course Christmas Dinner - a wonderful way to round off a special day.

Day Five

Today brings an opportunity to join an optional excursion into Bavaria, to the shores of the fjord-like Konigsee and the beautiful alpine resort of Berchtesgaden.

Day Six

You'll begin your return journey today, travelling back through Germany to a comfortable overnight hotel in the Rhineland.

Day Seven

Board the coach to continue your journey, crossing the Channel and heading for home.

Coach seating arrangements

This will be your seat for the duration of the tour. (Seats are not allocated on any connecting services to and from the main coach.)

Your journey

Depending on your departure point, you may leave your pick-up point very early in the morning and return very late at the end of the holiday, in order to meet your scheduled Channel crossing. There will also be a stop to transfer you from a feeder coach to your main coach, on both the outward and return journeys.

Meal arrangements

Where meals are not included, your Tour Manager will ensure there are suitable stops made for you to purchase and enjoy lunch and/or dinner each day.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

The holiday was brilliant, only faults were the obnoxious rude courier, who we have already complained about, and the long journey to our overnight hotel, nearly 5 hrs before we stopped for our first comfort stop, even though requests to stop were made by various people on the coach. They were just ignored by the courier.

Allowing for the four hour ferry delay due to bad weather, which no one could predict, the entire holiday was marred by too much coach travel. Very early mornings and very late arrival, especially at the overnight hotel made it a far from relaxing break. On one excursion we had a long stop just to visit the church used in "The Sound Of Music" yet only had a very short stop at the other two more picturesque places. Perhaps you should advertise it as a "Sound Of Music Tour" as it was certainly not the "Austrian Christmas Magic" tour that we booked. One of the stops had a cable car to the top of the mountain but we did not have enough time to use it. The optional Boxing Day tour was all about "Eagles Nest" and we were not told about another cable car to the top of a mountain (that we did have time to take) until we were on the coach and ready to leave at the end of the day! We only found out about this from a fellow traveller who had found it by chance. Also I was under the impression that the Lake Tour on Christmas Day was in fact a tour ON the lake not yet another tedious coach trip around it! I was not the only person to have this impression. I think that this should be made clear to everyone when you advertise the holiday. All in all I do not believe that it was a good experience and I would not recommend it to anyone. I also think that you should point out the fact that travellers will spend two days virtually coach bound to get to Austria and then again two days to return. This is a lot of coach on such a short break.

Hi Alan, we are very sorry that the holiday did not live up to your expectations. The itinerary in our brochure and website explains that Days 1-2 and 7-8 are spent travelling and we don't suggest that there will be an opportunity to do much else. We can only apologise for any misunderstanding.
Your feedback about the excursions has been passed to the relevant Product team for consideration. We try to find tours which will interest most people but of course personal preferences do vary and there may be some elements which are not to everyone's taste. We don't mention a boat ride on Christmas Day and we will try to ensure that future text avoids any ambiguity. We hope we might be able to tempt you back in the future on a different type of tour.

I had a lovely holiday in Austria. However, it tool 2 days to travel to Austria and 2 days to travel back, with just 3 days in Austria itself. I guess I didn't appreciate how long it would take to get to Austria. Newmarket should make it clearer just much travelling time there is in this holiday. Having said that, I can't see how you can get round the travelling time, unless you fly people to Austria.

The Tour Guide worked hard and was responsible, but wasn't that good in my opinion. She was very pleasant, but could have tidied her hair and clothes up a bit to look more professional. She also wasn't that bright, and showed her lack of intelligence with the knowledge that she did give out to us, however she was a practical person.

The only real disappointment of the holiday was the optional excursion on Boxing day. We went to Konigsee and Bertesgaden. Both places were surrounded by beautiful scenery. With Konigsee, if you didn't go on the boat trip on the lake, there was nothing to do but walk around the cafes and tourist shops. Berchtesgaden Christmas market was alright, but we went to a much better Christmas market in Salzberg on 24th Dec.

The Australian driver was excellent - he was very competent and worked very hard driving us to/from Austria, as well as being a very pleasant personality.

Despite the above, I met some lovely people on the coach and had a wonderful holiday.

London Couple
Enjoyed the place, very pretty especially at Xmas, very long coach journey.

I feel tour manager could have been more thoughtful to guests as in stops on way to Germany, I found her quite sharp generally but did try and keep us entertained on long journey with films and quiz etc.

Changing of coaches very unorganised especially at the end, lack of communication at stop 24. Value for money good.

There was too much coach travelling for me, it was the first of this type of holiday that I have taken and I would not repeat the experience. I did not realise that it would be such an early pickup, 03.45. It seemed to take ages to get to Dover because of the meeting of coaches and pickups, and there were plenty of stops on the motorways but this meant nearly 2 days worth of motorway food in each direction. Our tour manager was very pleasant, but told us about nothing as we travelled, not crossing country borders or points of interest. I was unlucky, there was no snow until late on Boxing Day, and there was a terribly annoying passenger on the coach. We went on a trip to a church on Christmas day, the marriage scene from the Sound of Music, but there was a service going on, if we had done the visits in a different order this would have finished. The hotels were both immaculately clean, but the food was very bland and uninteresting. There was chicken kebab with rice one evening, but it came smothered with gravy. The overnight hotel in Germany wanted to charge for wifi. The hotel in Austria did not have a lounge or somewhere to sit and enjoy a coffee or drink. There was no wifi on the coach, nor charging points, some coaches that we saw had wifi, coffee and tea on board. However it was well organised, a small refund that was due was paid promptly. The included trips were very enjoyable. If you want a basic holiday and can cope with the hours of travelling then this would be OK.

Sway, New Forest Friends
Seemed to have a lack organisation and coach journey was too long. Our first meal in Germany was not until late evening. The second day we arrived at hotel again really late evening.

The hotel in Austria was comfortable but lacked facilities to relax after dinner. It seemed to cater more for conferences and sports personnel.

The driver did really well considering his hours driving under his regulations. There should have been a relief driver with him.

The journey homeward took forever. We left the hotel just after 9am and arrived home via the ferry port then euro tunnel at about 10pm!

We all felt we needed another relaxing holiday.
