Itinerary

Day One

Fly overnight from the UK to Delhi.

Day Two

After your arrival, you'll have time to freshen up at your hotel before joining your Tour Manager on a guided tour of Delhi's fascinating Old City. Discover the historic Red Fort and Jama Masjid Mosque, and enjoy a rickshaw ride through the bustle of Chandni Chowk. Later, see the India Gate war memorial and the vast boulevard of the Rajpath as you turn your attention to New Delhi.

Day Three

After breakfast, we'll travel to Agra. Your time here will begin with an afternoon visit to Agra Fort, the monumental citadel of Mughal emperors, including Shah Jahan, builder of the nearby Taj Mahal. Tour the walled city, and enjoy the grandeur of its palaces and courtyards.

Day Four

This morning includes one of the highlights of your tour - sunrise at the Taj Mahal. The sight of this monument to undying love emerging from the darkness to bathe in the sun's first rays is unforgettable.

We'll return to the hotel for breakfast, then journey to Jaipur. On the way, we'll visit the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri. The former capital of the Mughal Empire, this vast palace complex remains almost perfectly preserved 400 years after its construction.

Day Five

This morning you'll visit Amber, the ancient capital of the Rajput Empire, its magnificent palaces and temples dominated by Amber Fort. Climb up to the mighty fortress to take in the stupendous views from the battlements. This afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Jaipur and discover the City Palace, the astronomical observatory and the stunning screened balconies of the Palace of the Winds.

Day Six

Today we head to the Rajasthani city of Patan, above which towers Patan Mahal, a restored palace that is now a beautiful heritage hotel reached only by camel cart. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour of Patan, and an evening of music and dancing before dinner.

Day Seven

Today we'll return to Delhi and take a short flight the 3000-year-old city of Varanasi. This evening, witness the Ganga Aarti, a Hindu ritual of fire and prayers held, each evening, on the vast stone steps of the Dashashwamedh ghat on the banks of the Ganges.

Day Eight

Take to the river as the sun rises, this morning, and watch the crowds of pilgrims at prayer on the ghats. Later, we'll head out of the city to Sarnath and the deer park in which the Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment. Visit the fascinating archaeological museum, home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka - the symbol of modern India.

Day Nine

Today begins with a flight to Mumbai. Once here, our guided tour will reveal some of this extraordinary city's highlights - Gandhi's Bombay base at the Mani Bhavan, Marine Drive, the majestic arch of the Gateway to India and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. See the immense, ornate facade of the Victoria Terminus rail station, which remains one of the busiest in India.

Day 10

Your final day in India begins with a ferry ride to Elephanta Island to explore its vast Hindu cave temple. Returning to Mumbai you'll have the chance to see the city's dabbawalas in action - collecting and delivering the homemade lunches of over 160,000 workers each day - and to enjoy an afternoon discovering the Prince of Wales Museum's astonishing collection of Western Indian artefacts.

After a Farewell Dinner we'll return to the airport and say farewell as you check in for your overnight flight home.

Day 11

Arrive back in the UK this morning at the end of a wonderful holiday.

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour.

Passports and visas

British citizens require machine-readable passports when travelling overseas. Your passport must contain two blank pages and be valid for 180 days after your return date from India. A visa is also required for entry to India. Full details of how and when to apply will be sent out about eight weeks before departure. British CITIZENS and some other European nationals satisfying certain conditions may use the online e-Tourist Visa application process at a cost of $62 (US) per person. Other British passport holders, who are not British CITIZENS, must apply for a full visa which costs £92. You may also, at extra cost, use the services of CIBT, our recommended visa handling partner, who will handle the whole process for you. Note that all travellers of Pakistani descent, regardless of citizenship, will generally be subject to more detailed processing by the Indian authorities which can take up to four months from application.

On your flight

On-board meals will usually include dinner and breakfast on outbound flights, and lunch and a snack on the flight home. Drinks are complimentary.

Luggage allowance

You are permitted to take one suitcase per person on the aircraft, which should not exceed 20kg.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Travel vaccinations

Requirements and advice can vary over time, and from person to person, so please contact your GP about eight weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or any other preventive measures.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

My only objection was being taken to expensive "tourist" shops to buy carpets, marble and jewellery. Would rather have spent the time browsing local shops instead.

Driffield Couple
First tour guide packed far too much into each day leaving us exhausted and little time to enjoy the excellent hotel facilities, The second part of the trip in Kerela was much more relaxed but I was disappointed with the tea plantations and spice fields. Expected more input in terms of tea making and the spices just looking at a field of tea did not suffice. The boat was not delux but very basic although staff were excellent.
