Itinerary

Day One

Fly to New York and transfer by coach to your hotel for a two-night stay in New Jersey.

Day Two

Discover Manhattan today and marvel at the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, bustling Times Square and the green acres of Central Park. Join our optional tour and enjoy stunning views of the city from Top of the Rock, atop Rockefeller Center.

Day Three

Heading north today, towards the beautiful New England states, we'll make a stop at the Yankee Candle flagship store in Deerfield. Browse the candles, and Christmas and Hallowe'en novelties, and relax in the cafe, before we continue to Mount Snow, our base for the night.

Day Four

A marvellous day awaits as we delve deeper into the Green Mountain State of Vermont, where the maples, cedars and aspens are ablaze with red, orange and golden leaves. Visit the quintessential New England village of Woodstock with its covered bridge and traditional Main Street before we cross the Kancamagus Highway - often voted best spot for foliage viewing - heading to North Conway and on to Bethel, Maine, for two nights.

Day Five

Soak up the stunning colours and rolling, forested hills of the New England scenery on our optional tour today as you travel the lanes of northern Maine, and join the Mount Washington Cog Railway for a ride to the summit of the highest peak in New England.

This evening, head out from your hotel a guided drive in search of moose.

Day Six

Journey south to the prosperous seafaring city of Portland, with its waterfront wharves and fine seafood restaurants. Then continue, via the exclusive Bush Family retreat of Kennebunkport, to Nantasket Beach, south of Boston and across Quincy Bay, and our base for the next two nights.

Day Seven

Travel into Boston, and enjoy the city today. Explore Quincy Market, the Harbourside and the wonderful New England Aquarium, and cross the Charles River to the home of Harvard University. Alternatively, join our optional guided city tour to see where America's Founding Fathers once strolled.

Day Eight

A final day sees you head to New York for your return overnight flight. On your way, call in Plymouth, where the historic streets of 'America's Hometown' were once trodden by the first settlers, and fashionable Newport, Rhode Island, where 'weekenders' cottages' are opulent mansions.

Day Nine

Arrive back home, after a wonderful holiday.

New England in the Fall Touring Hotels

The hotels used on our tours will meet the standard of a good, three-star European hotel. Rooms will have private bathrooms, telephones and TV. The vast majority will also have tea- and coffee-making facilities. There will always be a bar or restaurant on site or nearby.

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour.

Departure dates and Fall colours

This tour covers a large distance, and so Fall foliage will naturally vary. On early departures, leaves are more likely to have turned in the northern areas covered, whereas on later dates it is the more southern areas that will be most notable, with leaf-fall having already occurred further north.

Passports and visas

When travelling to the USA, British citizens require passports with an integrated chip (shown on the front by a small rectangular symbol beneath the word PASSPORT), valid beyond the return date from the USA. Visas are not normally required for entry, but visitors must apply for an ESTA online with US Immigration at least 72 hours before departure at www.cbp.gov/esta . The current charge is $14 for British Citizens. British subjects and anyone who has a criminal record or has ever been arrested should consult the US Embassy as a visa may be required. Note too that if you have visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011, or have dual nationality with any of these countries, you do require a US visa and cannot travel on the Visa Waiver Program.

On your flight

All outbound flights depart and arrive on the same day. All return flights leave in the evening and land in the UK the next day. On-board meals will usually include lunch and a snack on outward flights, and dinner and breakfast on flight home. Soft drinks are complimentary, but some airlines will charge for alcoholic drinks.

Luggage allowance

You are permitted to take one suitcase per person on the aircraft, which should not exceed 23kg.

Tipping

Gratuities are a way of life in North America, and it is generally accepted that they form part of a person's earnings. Customary gratuity to a coach driver or tour manager is about $5 per person per day; in a taxi or a restaurant leave 12-15 per cent of the bill and, in the bar, leave a dollar or so per drink.

Helicopter flights

Sightseeing flights by helicopter are weight controlled and balanced. Please contact us if you wish to book a helicopter flight and your bodyweight exceeds 250lb. (In such cases, a seat may have to be left empty, and some companies may charge a premium.)

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted on any coach forming part of your holiday, though regular stops will be made for your comfort en route. The majority of hotels in North America are non-smoking throughout, including in all bedrooms. In general smoking outside is acceptable, but do look out for signs prohibiting this close to public entrances or bus stops.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Changes to your hotels

Should circumstances require, we reserve the right to accommodate you in alternative hotels, of a similar standard, nearby. Full details of your hotels will be sent with your Final Travel Documents.

Hotel rooms

Standard hotel rooms in North America will contain one or two double- or queen-sized beds, and it is not possible to add extra beds to the room. Parties consisting of more than two travellers, but who have only booked one room, will be expected to make use of the two beds provided. If this is a concern, you may wish to consider booking more than one room for your group.

Fantastic holiday !! Tour Manager Dee and driver Jim were brilliant. Hotels were much better than we anticipated and the staff really friendly. Restaurant food was adequate nothing special but nothing wrong. Had a sea view room at Nantasket hotel which made it really special at sunrise. Local guide in New York and for the Nature trail were very good. Boston guide was mediocre. Overall if you don't mind coach travel this holiday is a fantastic opportunity to see lots of beautiful places and to meet great people !!

We enjoyed it very much. My wife had been to U.S.A. before but this is the only part that I have really wanted to see and I was not disappointed.
Everything was fine and Dee was a lovely lady but occasionally she seemed a bit fussy and got a little stressed with trying to organise us all.At times there did not seem to have been enough forward planning, with Dee very reliant on Jim, the driver, on the hoof.

Overall an enjoyable whistle stop tour of New England including New York and Boston taking in many sights in a short space of time. Liked all the hotels although the tortuous journeys each day from New Jersey to New York and back were not fun. Nantasket Beach as a base to visit Boston is wonderful. The stop at the Vermont Country Store was a true delight whereas the one at the outlet shopping mall in North Conway was mind blowingly dull as many of the stores were closed as it was end of season. This was also a slight problem at Kennibunkport where we stopped for lunch however most cafes etc were closed. The Mount Washington cog railway was fun although we didn't get to the summit due to the poor weather. Definitely very good value for money.

When we booked this holiday the flights were with Virgin Airlines, Newmarket changed them to American Airlines who were terrible, customer service was non existant as we were at the airport 3 hours before departure and was told that there was no seats together, we were put 20 rows apart on a 7 hour flight, but people who booked in less than 2 hours to go were given the 2 empty seats beside me. on return flight we was told that only one of us had a seat and had to queue at the boarding gate for nearly an hour to get another seat. It spoilt what was a good holiday

A beautiful part of the US, a great guide too but spoilt by the time spent on the coach each day. Between 6- 8 hours per day on a commuter coach, not a touring coach, is unacceptable.
The location of the hotels in relation to the places visited is ridiculous, eg New Jersey to New York is a minimum 2 hour journey which we endured 4 times in the first section of the holiday! Then Vermont to Maine was over 8 hours with 1 x 20, 1 x 45 minute stops, even then we arrived at the wrong hotel! The Maine hotel was miles from anywhere, cabs were non-existent, the day was spent roaming around the hotel.
I appreciate the price was keenly priced but the general concensus of the group was that we all would have been happy to pay more to have more time sightseeing than travelling hundreds of miles son a commuter coach, no leg room, no seat belts!
I shall definitely travel again to New England but I am unsure whether to use Newmarket Holidays.
