Itinerary

Day One

Travel by coach from your chosen departure point, and join Olympia in the ancient Rhine town of Andernach. After a first evening meal on board, retire to your comfortable cabin.

Day Two

Olympia heads upstream into the Middle Rhine - passing Koblenz and the Ehrenbreitstein castle - through a land of vineyards, castles and villages into the Rhine Gorge beneath the fabled Lorelei. This afternoon we'll arrive in Rudesheim. Stroll along the famous Drosselgasse, and join our optional excursion to Siegfried's Musikkabinett, travelling on the local 'Winzer Express' train.

Day Three

A morning cruise brings you to the ancient city of Speyer. Join our included walking tour of this, one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire, with its UNESCO-listed cathedral and fascinating altstadt (old town).

This evening, enjoy dinner and entertainment on board, as Olympia moors in Speyer for the night.

Day Four

Olympia arrives, this afternoon, in the beautiful Alsace capital of Strasbourg. Join a fascinating optional excursion by boat through the city's winding canals, and discover its soaring Notre-Dame cathedral - one of France's great Gothic churches - and the buildings of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.

Day Five

A leisurely cruise this morning brings you to Basel, Switzerland's only gateway to the sea. Explore the bustling Altstadt and Marktplatz, and perhaps take in the stupendous views from atop the magnificent Munster. This afternoon's excursion visits the spectacular Rhine Falls, with the option to take a boat ride (payable locally).

Day Six

Today's full-day optional excursion reveals beautiful lakeside Lucerne, with its restored wooden 'Chapel Bridge'. Enjoy a guided walking tour before heading through the surrounding Swiss countryside to rejoin Olympia in Breisach as she pauses on her northward journey to Kehl.

Day Seven

After a morning's scenic cruising, Olympia calls at Mannheim, from where you can join an optional excursion to beautiful Heidelberg on the wooded south bank of the Neckar. One of Germany's 'must-see' destinations, Heidelberg has inspired poets - and operetta composers - for centuries.

You'll rejoin Olympia in Mainz, and have the opportunity to take a stroll through the town after dinner.

Day Eight

Cruise back, along the most romantic stretch of the Rhine, to Cologne. Here our final optional excursion introduces the city, with its twin-towered Gothic cathedral and surrounding Altstadt, before you join the Captain and fellow guests for a special Farewell Dinner and entertainment on board.

Day Nine

Step ashore at the end of a wonderful voyage this morning, and begin your return journey to the UK.

Further Information

Joining your holiday

Your final travel documents, including the exact time and place of departure, will be sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure, providing all payments have been made. We are unable to give exact departure times before this.

Meal arrangements

Where meals are not included, your coach driver will ensure there are suitable stops made for you to purchase and enjoy lunch and/or dinner each day.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Optional shore excursions

Optional excursions are available on all cruises, and we recommend that you book now to secure your place. If the number of bookings needed to operate any excursion is not reached, the excursion may be cancelled. In this case your payment will be refunded in full.

Pre-paid drinks package

Spend just £17.50 per person per night, and enjoy unlimited draught beer, house wine and soft drinks (including water, tea and coffee) between 10am and midnight while on board Olympia. All other drinks are not included. The drinks package must be purchased by every person occupying a particular cabin.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory, but from experience we know that many passengers like to leave gratuities for the crew. An envelope will be left in your cabin for this purpose.

Dress code

The dress code on board and ashore is casual. After 7pm, in the lounge and restaurant, shorts are not permitted, and footwear and a shirt or T-shirt must be worn.

Luggage

Where possible, non-rigid suitcases are easier to store within your cabin.

Drinking water

The tap water on board is safe to drink, but may not be to your taste due to the purification system.

Itinerary changes

On rare occasions, the Captain may need to alter the Cruise Itinerary. If this happens, the Cruise Manager will keep passengers informed.

Cabin sizes

The majority of cabins on board are 10.5m square. Single cabins are approximately 7.7m square. (These measurements include the bathroom.) Standard Promenade cabins are 15m square and most have double beds (which do not convert to sofas), but they do not have a table or stool and will by subject to engine noise during overnight and early morning sailing.

*This offer applies to new bookings made between 2nd and 31st December 2016 (inclusive) only, and to river cruises on board Olympia and Sound of Music departing in April 2017 or May 2017 only. Prices shown when booking do not include the discount. The discount amount will be added to your booking once the promo code has been entered and will be confirmed before purchase. This holiday did not come up to our expectations. Although many people obviously enjoyed it, it was not what we had anticipated from a river cruise. There was little information about the places we passed apart from the first day along the Rhine Gorge and it was not always clear how timings would work to enable us to plan our time ashore.

We were disappointed about aspects of the itinerary - eg. insufficient time at Speyer, Heidelburg, Mainz, Cologne ; too long at Basel. The trip to the Rhine Falls was OK but a lot of coach travelling for a relatively short visit. Strasbourg was a highlight and we were pleased to arrive early so spent the whole day exploring this beautiful city. We chose to miss lunch to do this and instead took advantage of the local food festival being held that day. Sadly most of our fellow passengers missed this !

Meals were also disappointing - breakfast was quite good ( delicious bread and good selection of fruit) but lunch and dinner were uninteresting and there was very limited choice . Apart from the lunchtime salad buffet very few vegetables were served. We would have preferred a lunch buffet ( salad with cold meat / fish)for a light meal rather than pasta or a hot dish every day. The soups and desserts were very poor. ( Usually thin consommes that tasted of little more than a stock cube and "cream" desserts that resembled old fashioned "Instant Whip".) Cheese plate was poor, the crackers soft and cheese uninteresting. Main course portions were rather small and not for the hearty eaters!

Drinks. Wine was only served in 250ml glasses (or by the bottle) so as we did not wish to consume a third of a bottle at one go we declined to buy it and drank beer (OK) or water which was pricey as were incidental teas and coffees. Fortunately we brought our own kettle so could make our own choice of tea etc when required.

Entertainment. The on-board musician was clearly talented but as we did not want to listen to the same hits of the 50's and 60's every night we spent several evenings in the cabin as nowhere else to go! ( Many of the pasengers obviously enjoyed this but it wasn't for us.) The quizzes organised by the cruise managers were enjoyable.

This cruise may have suited many of the passengers but several of us felt as we did . Perhaps it is more suited to an older age group ( 70+) although the ship is not easy for those with mobility problems.

We enjoyed an excellent holiday and in addition to the crew we would like to praise Nigel our driver and Alex our replacement tour rep who was superb how he managed to keep over 80 people entertained for almost 2 hrs with a 40 question quiz was brilliant almost everybody was in tears and he maintained a caring sharing attitude all the time! Whilst I have every sympathy with Peter being ill he didn't have his heart in the job cutting the walking tour of Speyer short because too many people wanted to take part. The day we were due to visit The Rhine Falls there was a delightful couple but the wife had mobility problems and we overheard Peter telling Nigel to leave them behind if they didn't arrive soon which was particularly annoying when there was a lift available but Peter didn't tell them so they struggled up the hill a number of us were fuming!

London Couple
I liked being able to travel by bus to join the river boat. But whoever was responsible for the logistics of collecting the bus passenger could improve. Our bus went south round London on the M 25 while four North London passengers were taxied to Cobham. The bus seemed to have come from Northampton or maybe Nottingham. One passenger joined us in Cobham.

The food could be improved. Some of the food was weird to me. Breaded vegetables, mustard soup, miniscule fish portions, heavily breaded so we wouldn't notice, so-so potatoes rather than new potatoes, ice cream that tasted like ice milk. Maybe the budget is very limited and that is the best that can be expected. In my home, I find that cooking good food is not really expensive. The breakfasts were excellent. They deserve full marks.

The travel information could be improved. There is so much information available on CD's and films and yet when our cruise director became unwell, no replacement was offered for his lectures. Is it really hard to put historical and travel documentaries on our televisions,
or a projector in the lounge? I have been on maybe eight river cruises and I think that most boats offer more in education.

The staff had impeccable manners and were friendly. The singer in the lounge is outstanding. I liked having Jim, our bus driver, responsible for our various excursions and that we had these excursions to rather distant places available.
